What is common to good and bad must contain both good and bad without distinction. And this is not logically possible because good can’t be bad and bad can’t be good. There must be a distinction for good and bad to exist. A stick can’t be a rabbit and a stick at the same time. This is classical logic upon which our rational civilization is built. This is the logic of science and common sense. Lets dig into this. When you are good, are you also bad?
The problem is we are looking for the Common Ground in the wrong place. The Common Ground is not between the good and the bad because there is nothing common between them. So where it the absolute or common ground? The absolute cannot be perceived because perception needs an object of perception or foreground that separates this from that. And perception also creates the perceiver or subject. Relative means two or more, a duality. Another word for Common Ground is Non-duality, just to widen our understanding here.
On Noah’s Ark everything comes in pairs. (You see, you can find truth, metaphorical truth, in the Bible) Reality comes in pairs. If there were just One, you could not perceive it. You need two in order to have consciousness. Consciousness is a duality Delivery System. Can you see that? Well, you can’t see it, but you can sense it.
Yet, there is an absolute that holds the relative even though we can’t perceive it. We just know that. Reality is not Two. Reality is not a split screen. Lets introduce the metaphor of ON/OFF. Consciousness is like the ON light switch. You know it is ON because it isn’t OFF but you can’t know OFF. If you knew OFF, it would be ON.
However, there is no ON without the OFF. We know ON because we can’t know the OFF. The OFF is like the back of a hospital gown. You can feel it but you can’t see it. The OFF is the unknowable absolute. The ON is knowable relative, or just the Known. Now make the leap. I know I am ON because I am also OFF. Now jump way out there: I know I’m alive because I am also dead.
ON/OFF, good bad, are mutually dependent, yet mutually exclusive. One could say that the OFF is absolute potential, an Implicit Order, as Quantum calls it, where all possibilities are contained. The OFF (or God) is omniscient we can say. All possibilities, the whole ocean is in a single drop of water, as the poets say. The OFF is pure potential that holds all possible realities. That’s OFF. When God blinks, ON is on and creates relative forms on the current of the memory of the past, or Karma. The cosmos is a vibration of OM, the yogis say. The world is created in the blink of God’s Eye. The Yogis call this Shiva.
When we meditate we practice getting close to the OFF eye of God. When we tap into that OFF we find resonance with the Carrier Vibration of the Absolute. We feel regenerated, restored, and reborn. The source of cosmic energy is in the OFF. The OFF is absolute stillness because no form is moving. Without movement of objects, there is no time. Twas the night before Christmas and not a mouse was stirring.
When the world is ON, it is relative forms. From the viewpoint of the ON, we must choose between good and bad forms that we have named in order to function in this ON space. But from the viewpoint of OFF, there are no good and bad forms. There are just forms before they are given a name which makes them conscious along with you as the namer. All forms are polarities of this and that relationships. The basic relationship of the ON game is I-IT.
But lets get back to the OFF and why we both avoid it and long for it at the same time. Before we are born we are OFF. When we die we are OFF—the same OFF. And yet our ON depends upon the OFF because you can’t separate them, yet we must. The OFF is still here, just transcendent or upstream of the ON.
We are always just a nanosecond away from our Source, the OFF. We are just a blink away from God. But remember, when using the word God, this is not a personal God because personal means form, and form means ON, and ON means relative. The idea of a personal god is great for devotion, but not so good when looking for the OFF.
One could say that God is blinking the world On and Off, so fast that reality appears seamless like in a movie: but if the film is slowed down we would see the spaces between the thoughts of ON.
When we get close to the OFF in meditation or spiritual experience, we get a glimpse of the Whole that is the source Many, the OFF that is behind the ON. But remember this is not a special relationship, so our grammar fails us here. The OFF is not behind, below, above, or in between a divided ON. This flash bulb going off is the light from the OFF. So the OFF is not darkness and void but the Pure Light of Consciousness.
If all were Light, however, you could see nothing, not even light. You would need one spot of the darkness of ON to see the light of OFF. From the view of OFF, the ON is ignorance, says the Buddha. To ON, the OFF is darkness; to the OFF, the ON is darkness. But again, this is not a duality.
When ON gets a glimpse of OFF, we have a rebirth, the second birth, so to speak. But no birth is final. That would be an ON or form. Keeping the transcendent connection with the OFF is our practice of meditation. When we have been touched by the OFF—when we have been Called by the OFF—we are now motivated for keep on being born again. Yet, when the ON chases the OFF, it can never find it.
When we learn how to turn on the OFF, the ON gets a new orientation or alignment with its source. Now the relative good and bad of the consciousness world—while still good and bad—is kept in alignment with the OFF where creative potential is always available.
Ready for another insight? The relative forms of the ON get into feed-back loops when out of contact with its source in the OFF. The transcendent absolute OFF is made relative. This just creates move divisions in the ON. The OFF is our basic Goodness that is transcendent of the relative good and bad. Our ON is looking for the OFF, or source of basic goodness, in the wrong places, in the relative On consciousness.
When the light of the OFF flashes, however, in the darkness of the ON, the pair-of-opposites of the world stop going around in feed-back loops . A new whole that contains the pairs-of-opposites is imagined. A creative Idea is born. Stalemate ends. The civil war of relative ideas of good and bad ends, the war of the knowns is over. Love, the basic goodness, is ON and the old world is OFF. You life can change in the blink of an eye.
