Can freedom be divided between inner and outer? Can one be half free? There is a paradox in freedom. We think freedom is the ability to do what we want. But is self interest freedom? One is a slave to greed. So freedom must be free from attachment. What is free from attachment but love and service. But love and service is attached to the need of others. So….freedom is giving up freedom.
How light one is when they are free from freedom. We also define freedom as choice. Free to choose, we say. But this is a great burden, this freedom to divide reality into two and then we must choose one over the other, leaving what we don’t choose to haunt us.
Perhaps true freedom is when we feel we are chosen, when life chooses us. Falling in love, love chooses us. Creativity chooses us. So true freedom must be surrender…but not to some Other. That is a cult and the surrender of self. True freedom must be finding one’s self by surrendering it. Then you are free do do what you want, but you are not in control of what you want. You want what Love wants. Or you want what God wants. Thy Will be Done in both heaven and earth….So only God is free.
When you surrender, you don’t know what you are going to do or say next. Surrender is creativity. Creativity has no path. Freedom has no path.
