The modern “self” is a viewpoint outside of experience, which is the viewpoint of the scientist that was created after the Middle Ages. The scientist is the viewpoint of Yahweh, a view that is outside of creation so you can operate on creation, like a potter operates on the clay to make new pots. This viewpoint of the scientist created the modern age which operates on nature to control it and create more comfort.
Because of its success, this viewpoint from outside of me As Nature has become the only view point. Now we actually live on the periphery of our own life, looking in on the happy people inside, and we feel in exile and in needs of some new happy stuff. A secondary self has become the primary self, and the primary self as the view from the center is projected into future where we chase it as the Promised Land.
The Lost Viewpoint is the view from the center which is not a view point. To have a view you must be outside of what you view. There is a center of awareness that is not a view point, and we drop into that here and there, and it is transformative, when we do.
Go to a wedding reception. You are standing on the rim of the dance floor viewing the dance, maybe your arms are crossed, and you feel pulled to jump in and surrender to the music, but you resist. You cling to your view point, your standing out self as view point, yet you feel the pain of the exile. The music is inviting.
Then, maybe after a few drinks, you say what the hell and jump in. No longer are you viewing the dance; you are the dance. As you dance, you as view point is not there. Everyone and then this View Point will be aware of yourself dancing and you wonder if you are making a fool of yourself…
Life is a dance. Jump in. Give up the view from outside of yourself. You are the dance. There is nothing wrong with the viewpoint from outside, as long as you don’t believe that is who you are.
