We are all doing this TwoStep whether we know it or not. It becomes starkly evident when we feel our life isn’t going anywhere, or our forward movement keeps getting blocked. But with age comes wisdom, and our wake is long enough so we can see a pattern. Yes, that pattern is the only way you can see your dance step. There must be a sudden shift in viewpoint from being the one who is dancing to being at the edge of the floor observing your pattern. This is why artists get coaches, someone who sits in the stands observing their pattern.
What awakens this shift from being in the dance to being outside of it while we are dancing? I’m not talking about either/or here, being in the dance or being the observer. That is part of the dance, the two-step. The two-step ends when we are both the dancer and the observer of the dance simultaneously. This is called Mindfulness.
Are you mindful of what you are doing as you do it? But this Zen mindfulness is not being mindful of the moment, but mindful of your pattern of moments. Can you be aware of the pattern of your whole life? Your dance is not this the step you are making right now, but the unconscious patterns of your steps. We are conscious of our present step, but unconscious of the pattern our steps follow, a dance step we learned from our parents and the world.
When we cannot see the pattern which is unconscious, we are generating the TwoStep of one foot forward and one back because we are unconscious of the whole of our life, while conscious of the immediate moments of our life. Do you see the difference?
All form is pattern. It is the pattern of life that defines it. People know you by your pattern, which is consistent with yesterday. We know animals by their patterns. We know electrons by their waves as well as their particles. All things have verbs. Everything is motion, and motion is a pattern. Know your pattern, and you know yourself. (Metaphor warning. TwoStep is a metaphor that points you beyond the dance).
Looking at this diagram of the two-step, I notice that it is forward for men and backward for women. But what if our true nature is androgynous? We are both male and female, but here’s the logical trap. We are not male and female, male or female, but we are male/female simultaneously. So my male foot is active stepping forward and my passive female is at the same time stepping back. In this way Nature maintains balance. The universe is always sum zero.
Unless I make my androgyny conscious, I trapped in the two-step, always consciously stepping forward with my male side and unconsciously stepping back with my female side to restore balance. When I become conscious of my androgyny, I am both standing still in balance, and moving at the same time. But now I move with the music and rhythm of life, and I’m not trying to impose a male or female dance step upon life.
But I can be male or female, while at the same time knowing that I am both, but I keep that secret so you won’t be confused.
