About 15 years ago, I think, this mural at the Fort Pickett officer’s club was being photographed by me for archival purposes. It was painted by a WWII soldiers and as a mythologist I see the mural as a great vision of unity, a return to the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Life where all of society surrounds this center. Of course, you don’t see minorities here, for this is a vision of a past age where society was envisioned as white. That aside, the mural is a vision of unity around the Tree and the Goddess, who might be Eve before the apple of divisions was bitten.
I find this mural’s return to my computer screen interesting at this moment because the museum curator who commissioned this picture was here this morning getting some of his family pictures restored. He said the mural was taken down for cleaning but they didn’t put the panels back together right, so this picture is all that is left of the original. It still stands at the Pickett Officer’s Club, even though there are no officers there. I have done many wedding receptions with this mural in the background.
While I write the Pope is at the United Nations and Boehner resigns….is a change coming? Is a shift towards unity coming? Is something in the wind? And Brian Williams is back on MSNBC.
