Let’s put on a wide angle lens this morning, as I explore my new iPhone X. My hand love this mini-computer, the gateway to the Global Village that is not unlike a collective brain. But you need a portal to this magical universe where everything known to man is at your fingertip, literally you touch, and also you are a co-creator of the universe. That portal in your hand is on the web as an object, but your phone is also the center of the web. Every cell phone is the center of this universe. So what’s going on?
Lets look back in history when the Holy Roman Catholic Church unified the Western world under one dome, the dome of a Gothic church. This architectural wonder—that to a society took as much treasure as our moon shot–was the portal beyond everyday mind and history.
Then came the printing press, and the Bible was no longer the sole possession of monks writing copies in calligraphy, in Latin no less. With the printing press you could hold the Church in. your hand, in a book written in your language. You could turn the pages with your fingers and read and interpreted the Word of God yourself. The Dome of the church was shattered forever by God in your hand.
(view video here) No flip forward to my new X phone. God in my hand. I can flip through the collective knowledge of man with my finger. All the books ever written is right there, a library in my hand. I flip book with my finger.
And not only that, but instead of passive reading books, like in the 600 years of the Print Age, a passive consumer of knowledge, now I create knowledge, either written or visual. My finger, my touch, can change the world…like God touching the finger of man in the Cistern Chapel, I have the finger of God.
And so we can see the evoluton of Western consciousness right here in large chapters of history. First God was located in the Cathedral, the center being in Rome, and each city has it’s own outpost of Rome in its fabulous Gothic monument.
Then then Print make God portable, contained in a book like the Torah make God portable for the Jews in Diaspora. Now the electronic age has arrived, and the new church of the Web stretches it dome over the planet, and the smart phone is the entrance to this new church.
But this time the body is being brought alone. In the Holy Roman Church, you had to enter the church as a body. So body and mind were one. With the advent of Print, the body and mind were separated. When you read a book, you body does not participate, except to turn a page, but you read the words as a separate reader. You are not in the book. You have to be outside of the book as a Viewer in order to access the knowledge.
Im sure you have noticed, that Steve Jobs with the touchable Mac and then iPhone, brought the body back to the mind. The goal is to make the smart phone an intuitive seamless body/mind interaction. Your fingers operated the cell phone mind.
The Age of Print and the separation of mind from body, from the viewer from the viewed is over. Buckle up.
The word now is Seamless. That is the goal. I have a Honda Hybrid and the transition from engine to charing battery is seamless. You can’t feel the shifting of power sources, You can hear the change but you cannot feel it.
And with the evolution of iPhones, the function of the phone becomes more and more seamless, or effortless. The finger is like the finger of ET. And with Seamless comes Interconnectivity. All my devices, TV and family and seamlessly interconnected, and with the iCloud which stores everything as a safety net and hub from which all my devices can draw, seamlessly, so each divide keeps my place.
The goal is to constantly improve the relationship and unity between body and thought, the finger and the mind. If you mind wants something, you finger beckons it like a queen beckoning her servant.
