Ocaam’s Razor CUTS TWO WAYS. In a time in history when everything that rises is immediately cut into two conflicted halves I wonder where the Simple ONE that is not divided is. Surely the ONE, this Simple One that has no second exists, (Does God exist?) But we are trying to find it with a razor. Does the razor cut two ways? Let’s look.
“Occam’s razor is a principle from philosophy. Suppose there exist two explanations for an occurrence. In this case the simpler one is usually better. Another way of saying it is that the more assumptions you have to make, the more unlikely an explanation is.”
“The goodness of society is determined by the proportion of people who move their personal lines toward the good.” (Solzhenitsyn) What is the assumption here? Is the assumption two? Solzhenitsyn says that the human heart is divided by a moving line between good and evil.
Lets look at the simple dividing line between Conservative and Liberal view of reality. Ironically in politics each views the other as the other side of this dividing line. I think the Conservative view is the simple assumption that people have free will and it is up to them to choose the Good and not the Bad, so if. you are poor which is bad, or a drug addict, don’t choose it! Just say no.
But the Liberal view is on the other side of the line that divides the Simple ONE into Two; Man has free will: man does not have free will. Free will says just say no. The simple view on the other side of the line assumes no free will. I have no choice to change my conditions because conditions determine my choice. If I live in as ghetto I can’t choose to be rich because I’m determined by the ghetto and while I have choices inside the slum, I can’t choose outside of the limited choices that are given. Here is where Adam gets kicked out of the Garden of Simplicity because which every side he choose, free will or no free will, the other side bites him in the ass. You can’t get a simple Apple by cutting it in half with a razor.
So here we have the ONE that is Two…and that is not Simple because the ONE is the most simple, or the ONE that is not two….However, we try to find the ONE by not choosing the other half of the apple—we just throw that other half away. I assume that just Say No is the most simple choice. (the Right choice) or I can assume that conditions determine us so I make the Left choice (Liberals). These, of course, are extreme ends of both stick. Reality is not that simple.
Occams Razor comes into play here because this divide apple is not the ONE or the Simple Apple, the Original Apple, I might add. But the Simple can’t be attained by NOT choosing your other half. Whatever you choose just keeps splitting the apple and kicking the divisions down the road of time. We are haunted by the other half of the Apple of Truth that we chose not to choose.
Okay, we are in search of the ONE, the Simple ONE, and we discover to our dismay that we can’t choose it….because when confronted with an either/or choice…the ONE is either/or…the One that is Two. JK talks about the choiceness choice…Zen talks about this also as the aroused wisdom mind that does not rest on form, or the divided apple of choice. We must find the One that is Two…Perhaps our assumption that the ONE is a thing, or a noun. What is the most simple explanation, one that does not divide the One into two nouns?
You quoted Solzhenitsyn…man’s heart is divided by a moving line between good and evil…so man’s heart is either/or. both good and evil, though the line moves in history and in my own life…But I choose good, don’t I, yet what I don’t choose haunts me, evil follows me, so I’m constantly trying to choose the good and avoid the bad choice. I acquire guilt for my bad choices, yet every choice splits the apple. I can’t find the Simple ONE no matter how many choices I make. What assumption am I missing? I’m cut by Occam’s razor. I can’t walk this razor without being cut into two, into conflict and suffering, the wound that won’t heal. But wait…what is the Simple One is an action, a verb, not a noun. Who is it that cuts? Who is it that chooses? Who am I? Am I a noun or a verb. Am I a think or an Act? An action cannot be divided. A noun or thing can. Wait a minute. Are we on to something here? How do I get to this “mad” act?
Realizing that hope is lost…accepting Buddha truth that Life or all is suffering…that choice is hopeless….I surrender to this Simple Truth that that life is both good/bad. Life is Ironic! …and BAM! the Heart is healed by leaping forth in creative joy…It’s the surrender of choice not the choice that finds the Simple Truth…and through this mad act, this leap of blind faith in the Simple as being real in me…I am both …good/bad…innocent/guilty……Conservative/Liberal. I am dynamic Unity of the One that is Two….I am simply whole…when I act whole I AM whole.
