Remember The Sting movie with Redman and Neuman? The sting is a perfect trap where you are caught by your own strength. We either unknowingly create them ourselves or we create them for our opponent. And the Republican Party has mastered the art of the Political Sting where they catch their opponent in a double-bind out of which they cannot get, like Hillary’s Emails.
Masters of the art, the GOP is.
Because they are the creators of the political sting on the hapless Democrats, the can claim Moral Authority, the One voice that speaks, not only moral authority but the authority of God as well. Such is the hubris of the Republican Party.
But it is hubris that creates the Sting, or God’s Revenge for assuming you can speak His Word. God’s Word always brings balance, and hubris is out of balance.
Now here is the Perfect Trap. The GOP has longed existentially to claim the presidency because it is the President who by office speaks with moral authority. With the President the GOP can speak with One Voice and end the national civil war of values. Only One value will reign when all branches of government are speaking with One Voice.
But look what happened. They hitched their wagon with the promise of getting a Republican President to Trump.
And Trump is amoral. Trump’s morality is relevant to Trumps personal needs, for Trump’s personal power, not the power of the Party.
Trump is like Robert E. Lee who choose his state’s rights over the Party’s rights. Trump’s morality is relevant to his needs instead of the party’s or the nations.
Along come the Nazis. Up until the Nazis marched and killed someone one, they were just an idea, just an internet mob, a small rabble on the fringe. But when the Nazis marched in open defiance, suddenly both Republicans and Democrats could not equivocate. Nazis are morally wrong, so by condemning the Nazis, a moral authority was regain and both parties speak with One Voice…except Trump.
Here’s the irony. The Republican Party can claim its moral authority now only by disclaiming the Republican President. Only by rejecting their own power can they regain lost power, the lost power of being the moral authority, the One Voice that unties America, that restores America. They must cut off their own head in order to restore their body.
Isn’t that deliciously ironic. On order to live, the GOP must die. Now if that isn’t Christian I don’t know what is.
The Sting is the operational system of. God. Our Heavenly Father is an ironic God. The Jews have always know this, hence they make good comics. They understand irony. Whenever you try to separate good from evil and have only good, when you try to separate good from bad so you can have only good…you create the conditions for a ironic surprise because everything turns into its own opposite. Doughnuts are good, but if you eat too many of they, they become bad. At some point the game turns. Pleasure always turns into pain. Unless we can see the pain is all pleasure, we will be continually surprised by the Catch 22, by the Irony of God.
The Buddha Dharma sees that. That is basically what the Dharma of Seeing is all about, the seeing the Two that is One, the pair of opposites we try to separate by being on the good side of the coin. All liberation from the karma of irony comes through seeing through the game of opposites pitted against each other. In the Seeing alone. you are One…the Whole that sees the game, and when you see the game, you stop playing because you know there is no way to win. When you see that all games as unconscious ritual are lose/lose or Catch 22, you stop trying to get rid of the waterbed bubble by pushing down on it. You stop goring yourself on the horns of the dilemma.
But this doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do, that no matter what you do you lose, so why do anything. Not doing anything is doing something, so we can’t escape action, we can’t escape life which is action, doing something. So what do we do when whatever we do will fail.
Realizing the Perfect Trap, the vise that catches us between action and not action, realizing that we are helpless, seeing this through and through we see the irony of God, we see the irony of life, our life….and we just laugh, we just fall down on the floor laughing, and in that laughter we transcend the double-bind. That’s what comedy is all about.
But the same with Life. When we see the Perfect Trap, we laugh with God and just ACT regardless of the fruit of the action…because there is no fruit! Can you see that! If there is no fruit, no win, since everything is lose/lose…you act because…YOU HAVE TO ACT.If every action loses, but you must act…that is the great liberation, that is the freedom from death, which is the ultimate loss. This is the deathless state the Buddha says. The fearless state…the state of the hero who acts with every fiber of his being even though he can’t win. In that fearless action….he wins. For that is the action of God, that is God action, the action that transcends both good and bad. The One without a second.
The Sting is not something God does to us because God does it to Himself. In the Hindu mythology God creates the world and then forgets himself as the world in order that he can surprise himself, in order that he can be surprised. Think about this. A world without surprise is an intolerable world, because it will eternally be the same. No surprises. People image Heaven as being a place of no surprises…that is Hell.
Sherlock Homes in the recent series, bored to death, waits for the challenging case, and then he becomes alive. THE GAME IS ON. And what is the game? Sherlock wants to be surprised. When he knows everything, he is bored. He wants to be surprised, for it is only in the surprise that he transcends himself and the known.
