The South (Blackstone) existed with two societies, separate but not equal), and then through outside intervention the were poured together and stirred. Instead of a salt and a pepper shaker on the table, you have salt/pepper shaker. We are still trying to sort it out. Racial identity dies hard.
It creates a tension in one’s mind between thought and feeling. I should not feel unsettled with the other race, but I do. The double-bind is that I Should Not feel what I feel.
For me the practice of Mindfulness is the only healing—and this is a subjective wound first—is that when this feeling of a threat with the other race disturbs the surface of my mind, I don’t identity with it. I recognize it as my cultural conditioning, and place no personal investment in it. And by not giving the feeling attention, it quickly passes and the imagined threat with it. I then see the other person as myself, instead of a threatening other.
We have to realize the power of cultural conditioning, because if we don’t we believe that unconscious inheritance is who we are. We are not That, but we have to find out through an intentional practice of disengaging ourselves from cultural condition in the present moment where it rises.
When you feel a fear feeling, however slight, when the Other Race appears…there…there is where you practice the PAUSE and ask, right then, What is the Truth Here? Not Two…Not Two…This is a surgical severing of the tether to our racial past.
If you don’t cut the cord when you feel it’s tightening, you are instantly bound by Thought and resentment and blame of the Other for one’s own fear feeling. Now we have reenforced the conditioning. One can only get rid of the fear feeling by getting rid of the Other. One now has Righteous Fear.
We need a radical responsibility that recognizes that all fear is within and it has no one to blame but our own unconsciousness to our cultural conditioning.
We life in Air Conditioned houses, and we live in Culturally Conditioned Collective minds. The zone of acceptable feelings in this CCC (Culturally Conditioned Collective) is very narrow. What would it be like to live without CCC? We should want to know that for that is the only way to experience peace of mind.
This is an interesting discussion, though. Should we be judged by our past when conditions were different than they are now. What is being judged: the person of the past, since each of us is conditions by the conditions we are currently in. So in ten years, should I be judged by what I say and think now? Conditions are always changing.
So the question is this: is the person different from the conditions? In Blackstone in the 50s the whole town turned out for Minstrel Shows. Should those who participate be hung today? In other words, is there a place for forgiveness in today Social Media society? Can an electronic mob forgive?
Social Media is now swept by one fever after another. Twitter Storms rise and fall like tornadoes, sweeping everything before them. Each click is a breeze of a self generating storm. While the Founding Father created checks to Mob Rule, which is the Senate, there are no checks yet on Social Media, the new polity.
What is Twitter saying today, we ask. What is that? What’s a Twitter?
Suddenly Northam is like a fish in a fish tank. A nick in his fins when he inadvertently stumbled into the fake abortion controversy and now this ink spill on a costume party picture from 30 years ago. Smells like Russian Bots to me. The double whammy of Abortion and Racism in just one week. The Dems crucify him for Racism and the GOP nails him for abortion.
