Prediction and control is the imperative of our cultures; the two means for this security has historically been religion, and then science came along. Government is about prediction and control. Business is about prediction and control. What can’t be predicted and controlled both fascinates us and terrifies us. Florence and other natural forces can’t be predicted and controlled. We pacify our terror by increasing the power of prediction, we can’t control control nature, even though our whole Western civilization is built on the premiss that we must control nature.
On the political level, Trump is like Florence. Media exhausts itself trying to predict Trump, compare Trump, understand Trump, but he is the true Maverick. We don’t know what he is going to do next or why. Trump goes against the stream of our whole civilization’s desire for prediction and control. This is why we have great institutions to buffer us from madness. Madness is madness because it can’t be predicted and controlled. And yet, we love our Maverick because they can’t be predicted and controlled. Women are fatally attracted to Bad Boys. Men admire them. WHAT is he going to do TO us, and what is he going to do FOR us? We don’t know.
But I’m optimistic because our society/government was too predictable and too controlled. Grid lock is repeating the same behaviors, the same civil war election after election. Something had to break it up. So our Shamans dreamed up a TRUMP STORM to come and and destroy everything, so in the storms aftermath we can restore progress and free the log jam. The old political parties that were locked in trench warfare over who would control the government and society became too predictable. “We need a little madness in order to be able to cut the rope and be free.” (Zorba the Greek)
When life becomes a China Shop, everything ordered, arranged perfectly, and terrified of breakage, all to precious to touch and use, we are going to invite the Bull. Life is messy. Life is uncertain. Life is a surprise. We take away the everyday plates and glasses, and put out the good china and crystals, and everyone must eat properly, carefully, fearfully, we must have the Bull.
When life is divided. up into rigid moral categories. When people are regimented. When politics becomes ritual. When religion becomes unconscious, we must bring in the Bull.
The Bull comes in our personal lives as accidents, death, disease, mayhem…we invite the bull so we can evolve.
When life is predicted and controlled, watch out for the Bull. We are terrified of the Bull, but after the Bull comes, we say, well, thanks to that Bull I would never have discovered….
In mythology the Bull (the consort of the Goddess of Creation) is a symbol of her dying and resurrected son, death and life as two. points on the same horn. The Bull is Creation and Destruction as One. In Hindu mythology that is Shiva, the Lord of Creation and Destruction. They are not separate. When we see that, we can ride the Bull.
Morality divides the Bull into Right and Wrong. Morality kills the Bull by divided Life that is both creation and destruction. Morality like a butcher chops life up into good and bad cuts, all packaged for righteous consumption.
