The Age of Comfort is now over

August 12, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

There is no way to say what the First Cause of Climate Change is—given that our senses/instruments report that it is getting hotter—because there is no single first cause of, say, snow. Snow is the result of conditions, many variables. So Climate Change, like snow, is caused by conditions. So we connect the dots and make an educated guess about the conditions, and Man is one of them. This is circumstantial evidence. There is no direct link, since conditions are involved. So what you do if you don’t like the idea that man could influence the earth’s environment, is that you just select the other conditions that don’t include man.

But it’s like Trump and Collusion. There is no direct evidence that Trump conspired with the Russians, but there is plenty of circumstantial evidence. This is the way Sherlock solves crimes. You look at the mounting clues and deduce who did it. Then, confronted with the irrefutable evidence, the murdered confesses, which is the direct evidence we all want to close the case. Can Man confess that he is warming the house he lives in to a point he won’t be comfortable in it anymore?

The earth will be here, hot or cool, but the issue is our Comfort. We make the earth comfortable—at least in the Western civilization—through burning fossil fuels. So it’s really about our comfort that we feel is our right now. In the West we believe we have the right to be more comfortable than other people. And this Comfort Right is spreading like a virus. Cities in Asia are building air conditioned sky scrapers to create Comfort Zones for those who believe they hare the right to be comfortable. And by comfort I mean living in a narrow temperature zone where AC and heat create that sweet spot in the 70s.

Man historically lived on earth in the comfort earth gave him. He adapted to the heat and the cold. But now we have to create an artificial zone because what’s given is not good enough. We can control the thermostat of the room, the building, and even the earth as an extension. AC wherever we go. It’s all about the expectation of comfort, just like the Aristocrats and nobility of old lived in comfort far beyond the peasants and workers. You had to be born into Comfort, to be the Chosen for Comfort class.

But in the modern age, through industrialization and the increase of profit, now everyone can aspire to be nobility. Just like with Christianity, you don’t have to be a Jew to have a covenant with Comfort. Anyone can be the Nobility of Comfort. But as we see with Trump’s cronies, there is no end to the greed of Comfort. How much comfort can you use at one time? We store comfort now, wear comfort, show off our comfort, and exports it. The irony is that while me make the world more comfortable we make it uncomfortable at the same rate.
