Watching CNN documentary on 1968, there were two unique individuals that rose out of the “tribe” to speak as the people’s Unique Voice who could say: I am you; you are me. MLK and RFK. When this alchemy happens tremendous energy is created in a feed back loop of the members of a tribe giving their power to its leader or Center, and the center gives it back. This is like sticking a mike in front of an amplifier. This is a self-generating system that contains the polarity of I and WE.
Both of these “centers” were killed, in the same way Christ was killed, for he too was a self/we generating energy system that threatens the existing balance of forces.
And today, we can witness another I/WE energy system in Trump and his followers. When Trump is with “his people” you can see and feel the energy being created, which creates a high, a feeling of tremendous power. These energy systems are not necessarily moral, which I would defines as being for the good of the whole. When the energy works only for the good of the tribe need to feel power, then the system is out of alignment with the whole, and cannot stand because it will generate opposing energy as nature maintains balance.
I see the relationship between Old Testament and New Testament with a wider lens. OT is Hebrew Tribal consciousness. There is no I, there is only WE the People. And membership in this chosen tribe is through a Jewish Mother (Mary, if you will).
NT is the birth of the unique Individual, the totally unique person, the mythic individual, that Jesus Christ is a symbol for. The Unique I is born our of the people. And these to opposite pointes of view or references dance through history…I AM…WE ARE…
Listening to CNN documentary on 1968, there was MLK last words…We the people are going to the promised land. I won’t make it but the people will. Right out of OT symbolism.
This conflict between WE and I is institutionalized now in our left and right political parties, each of which has become a world view. The Right leans towards the free unique individual while the Left leans towards the rights of the People. The former is exclusive, the latter is inclusive in reaching their promised land.
The choices of either WE or I is framed so that if I surrender to the WE, I lose my unique I, and if I surrender to my I, deny the WE. Since both views are imperatives that must exist, neither can dominate the other. These two poles are the operating system of our human consciousness.
We are constantly flipping back and forth between the Sense of I as a unique person, and being lost in the WE of the moment. Tribal consciousness versus individual consciousness is the dance of humanity. We have to obey both imperatives, but we can’t because they are mutually exclusive, while mutually dependent.
What do we do? We identify with Unique Tribes (groups) that claim to be the Chosen One. This way we can obey both commandments: I am Unique because I belong to a Unique tribe (church/cult/political party.) WE are a unique I.
Our inability of have our cake (be a unique individual ) and eat our cake of being a part of something larger, becoming the tribe, creates an existential tension because we must obey both commandments but can’t. This tension creates the Leap of Consciousness into a new dimension where one is both unique and not unique, both and I and a We simultaneously. This is a dynamic unity, a creative unity that is not fixed by always creating itself…just as life is always creating itself.
