The erotic is aroused energy, the energy of life itself (since we are life). The erotic makes you “get it up” so to speak. It is additional energy, it seems, energy that is not all used up in just painting one’s normal world. And it is arouse by symbols, a picture in a magazine. For the male this symbol is the female form in an inviting posture. It is the pattern or shape of the form, and not the content or unique person, but the symbolic outlines of the form that arouses the erotic energy, the call to come out of your sleep, out of your dozing through life, the call to leap over the fence and explore new lands..the call to be surprised. When something is erotic, it makes you want to see the whole of it, which means that only when you see the whole and nothing is hidden, you are relieved from the pain of the hidden.
The spiritual path, I imagine here, is the escalator on which this erotic energy is taken to the floor of life itself, so the one’s whole life becomes the adventure of breaking down barriers in one’s own mind, of constant renewal. The same symbols that argues sexual energy on the lower level, now arouse spiritual energy on the higher level. Life beckons you, God beckons you like the woman in the ad selling beer.
Baby chicks are imprinted with the outline of the hawk. If a hawk flies over, they run for cover. If a pigeon flies over, they don’t. Perhaps our human psyches are imprinted with the outline of male and female hawks, so if one flies over erotic energy is aroused. The question then is not how to repress it, but how to work with it, how to direct that energy towards liberation from boundaries, and not into a karmic Ground Hog Day of just reacting to a hawk unconsciously. How does one make the energy conscious? That is the question.
Religion seems to be deathly afraid of erotic energy. And yet the mystic poets often write their devotional songs to God addressed to a “beloved that sound like someone erotic lover. This is erotic energy moved to its highest level. Erotic energy is aroused energy, but when it is freed from attachment to symbolic forms, the other sex, it becomes creative energy to write poetry with, or paint with.
So religion must be afraid of erotic energy because when transmuted into energy that is free from forms itself, it also frees you from the forms of religion. This is the hidden back door of the church. By having you repress erotic energy, you stay trapped in the closed city of the church. And this repressed energy turns into guilt for wanting to leave the walled city. Catch 22.
So, to use a really wide angle here, Erotic energy is God’s energy trapped in form, the love of God for himself. The symbolic forms of the opposite sex then are mediators that connect God with Himself…..God is His own Beloved. The divine unity of the Cosmos or Life eating itself, loving itself by consuming itself.
