The sword has two edges. The meaning of Guns/NRA is symbolic. Guns don’t kill people, symbols do. By making guns the National Symbol (like the flag, that’s a symbol. It’s just a piece of cloth actually, but the American Flag is not a piece of cloth, or why would men die for it.) I don’t know why it is so difficult to talk about symbolic meaning versus factual meaning.
When you raise the gun in your arms like Heston, he is holding up a symbol, not just some wood and metal, not just a hunting rifle. What does that symbol mean, I ask you?
From my cold dead hands….that is a symbolic statement. It means I will fight to the death to defend my liberty. And what is my liberty? The right to have an Assault weapon. Now the Assault weapon is a symbol. It means maximum kill ratio. It means I’m going on the offensive. Assault means offense, and it means attack. Assault weapons are never used to defend yourself from burglars. It’s a symbol of power.
So if I’m deranged, driven mad by the fear of being assaulted by “liberals”, then I’m may snap and get an Assault Weapon to assault those who assault me before they do it. I will assault them to. remove the imaginary assault I feel.
And since the assault is imaginary, the “liberals” are imaginary. Just ordinary people becomes imaginary Liberals who are assaulting me. I react and shoot as if I were at a target range. People are now just targets. And the assault weapon will be, after the carnage, taken from my “cold dead hands.”
