Lets look at it from the play of two opposite circles, Me versus the Other. Me and my Shadow. These two opposites are contradictory yet mutually dependent create a double-bind or Catch 22. where whatever I do to my shadow, I do to myself. The increase of energy in my position increases the energy in my opponent.
When I hold the two contexts together, allow them to be side by side without judgment, I creates the Vesicle Pice’s, the Fish that is the window of transcendence that creates a new and larger context that hold the preceding contexts together yet transcends them.
This is like our two eyes; alone they have no depth vision. Put them together, the context overlap and create depth vision. The metaphor holds up. When I hold the two contradictory Ideas, each with a difference frame of reference yet mutually dependent together, I create the Vesicle Pice’s or the unify whole of Christ consciousness (to use Christian terminology, but you don’t have to. The metaphor holds without Christ.
But this metaphor holds whether I’m looking at the Ego and Shadow or just relationship where you enter into creative dialogue. The Vesicle Pice’s is an intermediate zone that is Relationship, which is greater than the two parts, and that Zone is transcendent of the two parts and creates vision logic or new understanding…this is the geometry of a creative relationship.
Christianity as practiced by the church in history is a dualism delivers system. Whatever it touches cuts into two opposite waring halves, with god on one side and the devil on the other. This is the operating system of the Church as a social institution that claims to be the only mediator between god and man, the only exist our of the tomb of history. But the Church is a revolving door; you think you are going to be saved, but you end up back on the street.
The church is then an inverse salvation system; when you see the Catch 22 of religious as a duality delivery system, a tension creating system in you, then you are pressed to make the transcendent leap of Christ and give birth to yourself as a new being that transcends the duality of religion and the world….the whole world becomes your church and you can go nowhere that God is not. The message is that you cannot be saved; you have to activate your own salvation, your own transcendence of the double-binds of form and the world.
America for good and bad has been the battle field for the clash of two great mythologies; the industrial mythology that runs on the clock and the cog, and the planting mythology that runs of the slow beat of the growing seasons. Each built an economy and social structure. The Industrial mythology is rational and scientific and leans towards the well order machine, the planning mythology is Romantic and worships the heroic individual who resists becoming a cog in the machine. So we have these two imperatives: The Romance of the autonomous hero, and the efficiency of a well ordered mechanical society where everyone is obedient to the hierarchy of assigned roles. These to polar opposite mythologies dance with each other through American history.
These two incompatible commandments—belong to the greater whole and be an independent unique person—create a moving double-bind in our history where we struggle to obey both commandments simultaneously, but can’t do it. You can’t obey and be a rebel simultaneously. Religions says obey God; society says be your own self and listen to you inner drum beat. Religions says don’t obey the flesh but God Laws. Society says buy a Mac and don’t be a PC man.
