As drama Cohen’s story is classic redemption story of taking radical responsibility for one’s good intentions turn bad. Doing Good is the lure that catches the bass. The temptations of Christ and Buddha are about resistance to good intentions to making the world better than it is, myself better than I am…..
When in the cross hairs of one’s karma, we sit like Cohen, both innocent and guilty, a confessed bad man that is good. Temptations always come in the double-bind where we feel we have no choice but to do what we are doing. The double-bind is when the choices offered equal in value but opposite, and one must obey both.
The action one takes to obey both choices, which cannot be obeyed is going to be an objective crime—the way others and the law sees it—but subjectively the right and only way. The mind and body (one’s actions) are split into conscious beliefs in what one is doing is the only and by only the best action and the unconscious actions, what one is actually doing. So one cannot consciously face up to what is actually doing, hence anger when confronted.
When trapped in karma, one actions become ritual in that you repeat. yourself as an unconscious pattern, like in Ground Hog Day. You feel trapped, but all you can do is commit to the ritual as your Exit. So one digs the hole deeper in unconsciousness until the gap is two wide to sustain the tension between the unconscious and the conscious, for the Will of life is to become more conscious, not less. One is, thus, going against the Will of life itself, and there must be a SNAP.
When the snap happens, you are Cohen, when it doesn’t happen, you are Roger Stone, who is still the loyal henchman of Trump.
Loyalty is obedience to a categorical imperative that one must obey: Belong to something and be loyal that that to which you belong. However, the other equal imperative that must also be obeyed is Be Unique.
Both commandments must be obeyed. Usually, we obey one or the other. Cohen is loyal to Trump, he belongs to Trump as an organization, the Trump organization. But how does he also obey the opposite commandment which is, essentially, to be a rebel and not loyal. He belongs to Trump who is the epitome of rebellion against the main stream.
Cohen is able, therefore, to obey both commandments. However, there is a built in tension here. By being loyal to Trump who is being disloyal to society as a whole, Cohen finds himself being disloyal to humanity itself, by being loyal to Trump…so rebellion trumps loyalty and he rebels against Trump so he can by loyal to a higher whole, society or humanity itself. Now he has reached a higher resolution of the contradictory commandments, he rebels against the lower rebellion so that he can be loyal to a higher order, one that contained the Trump rebellion, but now Cohen is not torn apart by the inherent tension of Trump’s Rebellion that is of a lower order.
Oh..and another thing…life, the cosmos, is nestled holons, every order within a higher order, like Russian Nesting Dolls. Trump is a lower order nestled in a higher order, but from the lower order you cannot see the higher order, as you cannot see the floor above you in a house. But there is a sense of the whole house, a design of the whole on every level, but one cannot be conscious of it from the lower lever because that level is a whole world in itself, a lower gestalt, if you will.
But just as DNA of the whole organism is in each cell, the whole is in each part, so there is a built in tension when you are one level but unaware of the next level . Something is pulling at you, and to satisfy that tension, or remove it, we usually just double down on the commandments of our lower floor that promise rest and release from tension.
But as some point, for the sensitive heart, the tension between lower and higher cannot be sustained, and a break down is engineered by the whole, so that its lower part can break through to the upper floor and make the whole house conscious. The goal of life is to make the whole conscious, to make the parts conscious of the whole, either all at once, like a Buddha or gradually, like us. But the Buddha or Christ is the awareness of the whole house, yet with compassion for those still stuck on the lower floors.
