Practical Magic movie

The movie Practical Magic has levels, and one level was the Patriarchal suppression of Eve that begins with Genesis and Yahweh anger at Eve for messing up his son Adam. Patriarchy is an inversion of reality that creates Nature (Eve) as a force that must be controlled in order to prevent chaos. Without male control, Nature (Eve) will run amuck. Why its going on today with the policies of the Patriarchal Republican Party and Trump, specifically with the restriction on birth control by putting whether a woman gets it in the hands of her male employer, who gets to “grab them by the pussy.”

Using a wide angle lens, I appears to me that Eve is rising, pushing hard against the “glass ceiling” that Patriarchal Culture that paints if opaque. A glass ceiling that is painted looks solid and you can’t break through. But when the ceiling becomes transparent, it is just breakable glass. Eve is breaking through that ceiling. And what’s on the other side? Potential is on the other side. Evolution is on the other side. Fresh air and possibility is on the other side. The Patriarchal Culture we have been living in for thousands of years has become toxic. We are too big for that room now. In our panic and paranoia, we are shooting ourselves, going totally insane. Our transcendence has been cut off.

Humanity is the Transcendent Species. It is our true nature to explore, to transcend the known, and to create new worlds in which to live. When the glass ceiling is painted over, our growth doesn’t stop, change doesn’t stop, but our Cultural Space, if it doesn’t grow with us, becomes a death trap. Unable to see the light from above, we turn upon ourselves in greater and greater spasms of insane violence.

The repression of Eve and the separation of the male from Her, the mind from the body, has created a culture like old Yahweh who is obsessed with punishment, judgment and vengeance. The loving Father of Jesus is no where to be seen.

If our American Culture is going to serve itself, Eve must restore us to the Ground of Being. Like in Avatar, the Mother restores balance. She doesn’t judge. It is the Judgment of the Patriarchal male god that, inflated on its own power, that has separated our Culture from the Ground, and as we lift off like a balloon with no ropes, the anxiety and panic increases. But being held in a trance by the balloon of Culture we can’t see the ground from which we are lifting off. Eve is biologically connected to the Great Mother of life, and so She must return from her exile.

While Yahweh put two cherubim’s to guard the Tree of Life from Man/Culture, Eve is the Garden.

Practical Magic is a 20 year-old movie with N. Kidman and S. Bullock about witches in New England. that for me is a metaphor for getting you mojo back. When you are in a slump, when down and you feel what’s the use, take refuge in your Practical Magic.

Magic means a surprise that doesn’t fit our cause and effect map of reality. Practical means it is useful in our everyday life. You need to create a Practical Magic space of play in your life where the means and the end are One. Something you love doing that has no purpose. When you think there is a purpose, you are going to eventually become exhausted and depleted of energy, and you say what’s the use? I’m not getting anything out of this.

Practical Magin, referring to the movie as metaphor, was that the witches could not deny their nature. Their nature called them and they had to return to. use their magic to get out of a fix. The witches were like witch McGyvers. They used magic potions to get out of a fix.

The other dimension of the movie as I look into it, is the the “witches” were women who could operate of the material world—regardless of what people thought. The “witches” played with reality. Play is practical magic.

And you can play with your reality too. I used today’s talk to model Play real time as my talk. My talks are play. For me there are Practical Magic because I say things that inform me, that surprise me, like a rabbit out of a hat. Wow…where did that come from?

I love movies because they are Practical Magic. I find surprises in them, rabbits pulled out of a hat. Magic for magic is just entertainment that has no use. But Magic that is Practical has an undiscovered use as a side-effect. The Use of Practical Magic is like the unexpected side-effect of drugs, except in a positive way. Practical Magic has unintended side-effects. Life is the unintended side-effect of Practical Magic. Life is the unintended side-effect of play.

If life is the intended side-effect of play….you are not playing. The magic is not practical.
