Great Netflix movie for Memorial Day: War Machine. With Trump in the White House to WIN, WIN, WIN, this movie questions our American ideal of always needed to be the winner, or Number One. This Idea filters down into all corners of our life. Winning makes sacrifice valuable; winning makes life meaningful. The greatest sin is to be a Loser. But at some point everything turns into its own opposite, and winning always turns into losing. You cannot always have winning, just as you cannot always have UP. At some point Down takes over.
Last night I watch Destination Tokyo, the war the created our War Machine and the last time it won a war. Korea was a stalemate that is still unfinished. Vietnam destroyed us. Iraq and Afghanistan are still going on….Our Empire has gotten bogged down in the sands. Are we doing war reenactments of our past glory, inventing windmill dragon to slay.
In War Machine the general was driven by the power of his Idea, which was divorced from the reality in which he wanted to plant his idea. The Afghanistan soil didn’t want to grow hid Idea. When reality changes, if our idea of reality doesn’t align with the ground we have insane wars.
