The Zen of Sherlock is about the foreground to background awareness that is the function of Zen. Using the metaphor the the photographer’s lens, background awareness is the wide angle lens and foreground awareness is the zoom lens. We are conditioned in our world view to use only the zoom lens. This is the lens of the scientific method that was a world view born in the enlightenment and through its spectacular success in making stuff has become the only lens our mind can use.
When are born we have a wide angle lens with the zoom lens. Then we are trained in the use of the zoom lens—what is that, what is that—and we forget the wide angle lens. But we all know that the foreground facts and object have meaning from its context. But we can’t see the real context of the object we see because we don’t use our wide angle lens that comes with out life. So we provide a fake new context to give meaning to the object we see. We can see this everyday when the same event on the news gets interpreted with opposite meanings. Truth is like a green screen. We just project the background story we want and believe that is giving meaning to the foreground objects.
Sherlock has an activate wide angle lens that sees the total context of every situation. He does not project a story background on facts and get a premature judgment of reality. Sherlock is like the seafaring Vikings and Polynesians who could read the ocean and navigate without a compass. The were aware AS the ocean and not aware OF the ocean.
