The Zen of Sherlock

August 14, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

Sherlock…oh, we love him because he is us. Je Suis Sherlock. We all have the Awareness of Sherlock, but we don’t believe it because on our materialistic reality map we are all just a bunch of disconnected facts and events. But in the mind of Sherlock, everything is interconnected. All is One. Sherlock is a Zen master how has a satori when he grasps the whole from the disconnected display of dots.

You know, like in the mind puzzles where you are supposed to see the cat in the dots. Some see it sooner than other. The more effort you make to see the cat, the harder it is to see the cat. When you give up the quest, however, you suddenly see the cat from your relaxed mind. A relaxed mind activates the Sherlock within.

You can’t see the whole, you can’t connect all the dots by effort. Only the relaxed aware mind, the choiceness aware mind can suddenly connect all the dots and get the big picture that explains everything. We are all looking for the idea or the picture that explains everything. But the one ingredient that is always missing is our self, our own mind. Sherlock in the movie is always bothered by this. He wonders if he is cocky, too arrogant, too certain.

So in our quest for the big picture that solves the crime of the cosmos, that solves the original sin of humanity, of me, we are all Sherlock. We are all the detective, the sleuth on the trail of our awaking when we say AHAH! I SEE!

Connecting the dots…connecting the dots to get the big picture that relieves us from the stress and tension of disconnected dots. When our life is disconnected, we don’t feel whole. We don’t feel that we are the One without a Second. We feel just just part of the many, and the many are not connected by untying. The many are just a random collective of things and events, signifying nothing. Unless we can connect the dots, there is no meaning. Unless we can see our life as One Whole, there is no meaning. It’s just a random collection of billiard balls bumping into each other on the green table of life. We have to see the game.

When the mind that rests on no thing is aroused (prajna in Zen) the Game Is On….Sherlock is awake. The intention to see the Whole Story is awake and energized. We are on a spiritual path. The solution, the big picture is our primary goal in life now. Nothing will deter us. Everything is a clue. Every detail is important. Nothing is random. Nothing is coincidence.

But we engage the Game from the state of Not Knowing. If we Know, there is no game. The game holds a surprise. The game is a mystery. The game seduces us. The game is even erotic. The Game is On.
