The President is a secularization of the ancient myth of the Goddess and her dying and resurrected son. The Office of the President is a mythic Office that holds great charisma and power, and the mortal who is elected President for a brief four or eight years lives like a god and acts like a god, in that his actions change the history not only of our society but of the world now. That is what a god does.
Like an octopus, this myth reaches out in many arms, both conscious and unconscious. The Mother Earth with her waxing and waning son, the moon, is one of the primal myths that shaped human society. All life is dying, and mysteriously, it is reborn. Spring follows winter, the child grows up and replaces the parent. This is the cosmic rhythm of life. We humans have a primary need to get in alignment with that cycle. We are life, so we cannot help but get in alignment with our source.
In our Republic, mortal presidents come and go, but the Office of the Presidency is immortal. There is great constitutional debate going on right now whether the President is above the Law because he makes the law, he is the law. Is the Law higher than a god? Does the god have to submit to a higher order? What is that higher order? This is a problem we are going to have to face in the coming months.
The problem with Trump (oh, yes there is a problem) is that he never made the sacrifice of his personal power when becoming the President. There has to be a death when you become president, the death of your personal life and your personal power, i.e. business powers. Trump never did this. He wanted the Presidency to enhance his personal power.
Like a yogi gone made in ancient Indian mythology, he was given the power of the Office without first going through the disciplines that prepare the ego for this sacrifice. In order to become a “god” you have to give up your personal and mortal powers.
The American Presidency replicates the dying and resurrected Son of God in this Office. If you want to become a god, you are going to have to die to your mortal personality for the time you are in office. Your concern will be not for your own well-being but for the well-being of your people. If you do not make this sacrifice, take on this Cross, you will do only harm because your intention will be divided between the Will of the People and your personal will, and these two wills will not be compatible or in harmony. Your success as president will be determined by the completeness of your death. As Obama said, your weaknesses as your strengths will be magnified by the Office.
