Question by Thomas was asked how you can go beyond yourself without some outside energy. This question assumes, as our mechanistic laws dictate, that nothing can move unless there is an external source of energy. So in order to evolve, something external to the world has to push you, has to kick your but. This is the way this think, and it creates problems. For now I have to create the Idea of some external power greater than me. Well who would that be? This leads us away from our evolution and our call to go beyond the laws of the machine. If I use the laws of the machine to understand myself, then I will be a machine…and the Call of the Buddha, or Christ is to go. upstream of the machine and its logic. I am called to go beyond the machine and being determined by some external force, whether that is God or society. You see, if I’m caused, if I’m determined by something external, that external is a Fill in the Blank. I can imagine gods and demons as my cause, as my tyrant or my liberator. But either way, I’m the caused and I’m not free.
If you change your map fo the self to a bigger map, we can see that our “self” is very small, and that which is beyond or greater, more powerful is our True Self, that which is second to none. But on the flat map of our known world, this just means a big ego. That map has to go, has to be questioned because the only thing that results from following it is conflict and pain.
I read Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and it is only now after the froth of his words and images, that the deeper meaning comes through the fog. When you work with a movie or spiritual book like this, the meaning is not in the content. The medium is the message. The whole book or movie is the message, not the content. If we spend out time analyzing the content we never grasp the whole, or better, the whole can’t grasp us.
So here’s what I’m working with. The Whole (God or whatever) is upstream of consciousness. When we hear its call we are grasped by it, hooked by it, and the Whole pulls us through adventures of discovery of the Whole. WE never finish this journey because the Whole is dynamic, always creating itself, as nature creates itself out of itself. This Dynamic Unity never rests. The Son of Man has no place to rest his head.
