Okay…This was the most joyous talk I’ve given. And it wasn’t the gin either. When we break the puzzle, crack the nut, pierce the obstruction…we dance on the ashes of ourselves. Ah…and this reminds me of Shiva. The god of creation and destruction. He dances.
In Zorba there is great destruction of one’s good intentions. You whole life crumbles before you. All your dreams, all your hopes come crashing down. What do you do? You DANCE! Dance restores unity. Dance restores God. Dance restore You. Dance restores your spot. And the ironic joke restores you through laughter. God, the Jewish God, is a God of laughter, and so is the Buddha to the Zen….Irony….irony…that is the key word here.
Life is ironic. Life never works as intended. All plans get screwed up. Yet..you don’t stop planning. And you don’t stop dancing. The plan exists to fail so…..you can dance on its ashes. Life IS the dance!
And all the time I thought it was the fulfillment of my plan.
So, I said in the talk that if you want to know about Judaism, watch Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld. That’s all you need to know. All that bible stuff and history…naw….it’s just the irony you need to see and when you see it, you break out in a laugh. Laughter of the dance.
Life is the Horns of the Dilemma. Life is the double-bind, life is the Catch 22. Life is these pair-of-opposites. It is through this ambiguity that we make the leap of life, to laugh and dance. If we don’t leap over the bull (who is the consort of the Goddess), we get stuck on the horns of the bull. We leap over the bull through dance and laughter.
If you only watch one of my talks, watch this one. I share with you my path of liberation. That is the only way, you know. I’m not liberated, but I’m working on it. And through sharing my liberation as it happens, I affirm my liberation as it happens. The best way to learn something it to teach it. The best way to freedom is to share it….honestly…it’s Just This.
That’s all. Liberation is a good laugh..tears running down your cheek laugh. And Zorba the Greek ends with the pair of opposites, Zorba the grizzled old Greek and the young intellectual, dancing on the beach with no beat except to the music of the heart of unity.
I must return to Zorba and watch the movie again. I have the CD. Zorba is like Twitter, consist, everything packed into a few words. Zorba is Zen…a zen koan that you must crack and break out laughing or dancing. Either one is OK. Life is a Zen Koan…a contradiction that can’t logically be solve. Facebook is a thread of tangles trying to solve this koan. Electronic Media is a tangle trying to remove this knot. We go to sleep with a knot, we wake up with a knot. Right in the gut. We can’t laugh or crap. The knot is like a white hot iron ball caught in the throat that we can’t swallow or cough up. I get this when I drink a martini, and I can’t swallow or cough without the gin coming out my nose.
