This is a real empowering talk for me and I hope for you. Just say NO to being a victim of anything, external or internal. But in order to SEE that one needs to see the secret investment in being the victim, and that is not easy. It’s secret because we don’t want to see it. The spiritual path is making the unconscious conscious, making our secrets known, admitting to our unconscious investments, our off shore accounts and shell companies. Seeing is confession to ourselves that we have hidden ourselves from ourselves.
So we are looking at our society has having a secret investment in Victimhood. I mean, Trumpism grows on people feeling the victim and Trump rescuing them. Consumerism itself is an investment in creating and maintaining the sense of being a victim, the feeling that you are not complete and need a new product to restore your peace of mind.
The trigger for the mass shooting is a kid who feels the victim to such a painful extreme that even death is better than a continuation of being locked into the prison cell of solitary confinement as a victim, a life sentence, as far as he is concerned. Death is the final Break Out! The NRA is right. He could do this Break Out with a knife as well as an assault rifle, but the AK 47 is available so why not use it. The Social Body doesn’t get much juice from one kid being killed by a knife, but it gets a lot of Victim Juice when 17 are killed.
The Media gets ratings. The politicians get to rant and rave and say Never Again. Everyone get angry and feels like they are doing something, There is a run on gun sales. The nation feels better for its mass unity through grief. We all feel one in our grief. The fragmented world is forgotten for…three days. Then another news event—Mueller invites 13 Russians—and the Mass Sacrifice of innocents is forgotten.
But I can hope this time its different. If the students, the first victims rise up and say We’re not going to be victims anymore, and start a sustainable political movement of defiance. Well, that would be different. It’s only when the victims stand up and refuse to play the Victim Game does the game end.
This is a message that is both subjective and objective. The mass shootings is, of course, an objective situation that we all view from afar, but the feeling of being the victim is also subjective; I’m a victim of my own thinking, my habit, my “evil” nature, my body, my conditions…on and on. The victim is a feeling of being helpless, of not being in control, of not having a choice and of being created by some external unknown source. The feeling of being a Victim is the feeling of being separated from myself, of being divided, confused, and unable to choose what’s true. The Victim Feeling is also the feeling of needing a savior, someone who can come in and save me from myself.
