Subtitles of a movie divides the viewers mind, I find, and prevent your from fully losing yourself in the movie. When you read subtitle or the Breaking news copy at the bottom of cable news, you are reading the abstract symbols of language instead of seeing the total picture. This is a great metaphor for thought that runs through our mind like a ticker tape. And ticker tape is also a good description of thought because thinking is time, and ticker is a clock.
Thinking is our time line running through the Present Moment of our life distracting out attention. but the ticker tape always comes with our memories and what we know attached to it like flies on fly a strip of fly paper. While thinking look fresh new, it is really old news dragged through the dirty storehouse of the unconscious pulling up what’s buried there into the day light of the conscious mind. And we believe this tape.
Meditation and its companion mindfulness are the scissors that cut this tape. It takes time to cut this tape because thinking has inertia to it. Our mental patterns that are maintained by thought have great forward movement, so the tape cutting is gradual. It’s a practice. You practice in your everyday mind to stop believing in thinking, you stop reading the subtitles, and you ask what the truth is in this moment. The truth is the total situation you are in. You look around. Where is the dread thinking is warning you about? Where is the future problem thinking is sounding the alarm about. While thinking is saying you are not Okay; you look around and you are Okay.
Thinking is the Worry Mind. How has worry worked out for you?
