Media, the Dread Delivery System

Notes on the shooting in DC.

When the Collective mind has extreme acne, pimples will rise and burst. While the teen gets acne from too much chocolate, the collective gets it from too much Media. Pimples are mini volcanoes, and the only appear on the face of the Collective because the Media puts its magnifying glass on it. Media is not the cause of the eruptions, but the conditions on which the eruption depend. Cars need roads to run; roads do not cause cars, but without roads, no cars.

When these events happens, Media goes into overdrive, rushing to the scene like high school kids to a school yard fight, ringing the violence and cheering it on. Media is so happy to have something real to talk about instead of their own talking heads. Media is the water we now swim in. And it is only the splash that gets attention, both for those watching the splash and those making the splash. Without the. splash, no attention; without attention, no media.

TV Media is not you. It is a movie in real time, but still a movie. You are safe in. your home watching a movie we believe is real. That which is happening in the movie is not happening to you in your living room. But Media delivers the news on a emotional platter of anxiety (which makes us watch), so that we FEEl the news. Newspaper delivered the news without immediate personal fear. Media news like a movie makes us experience the news as US. Commercials have conditioned us to experience media emotionally and not be conscious of the subliminal messages. When we watch TV News, we can notice that the feeling it gives us in not who I am. The feeling is being created by my identifying with the news as if it were real.

In order to enjoy a movie, we suspend disbelief that the movie is not real, so we pretend that the movie’s story is real, otherwise we would not enjoy the movie. We would just sit there and talk about the move, throwing spit balls at the screen.

The same with Media news..it’s not real in that what you are really looking at is a screen with moving dots on it. The story in the screen is a created story made by the Media delivery system, the producer, who selects what to show, how to show it, and with the story that gives the events meaning. News is delivered intentionally with a peaked emotion so we are compelled to watch it. That’s just the way it works. Your emotional involvement with the Media is the purpose of the media. The content or news is a secondary purpose. It’s real purpose is to make you watch and not turn to another channel.

For those of us who can remember the age of print, when one got the news of a shooting it was already a day old, and you had the whole factual story there in front of your with your coffee. Just the facts were delivered. Now, as the shooting story goes on and on and on, probably all day, the news is emotional first and factual second. Feeling is what’s important, and feeling is immediate and personal. Media news is personal. I live it, I feel I, and it makes me anxious because it is like a friend who reenacts her painful story in my kitchen, filling it with her pain, so that I feel her pain, and think the feeling is my feeling. So media reenacts an even in an emotional way, giving you the pain, the energy, the attention and excitement of real time, reenacted on the movie screen in the same way an murder mystery enacts an event. The only difference is that we suspend disbelief with the murder mystery, and pretend I’m horrified. The death is pretended that it is real. But real time Media News bypasses that suspension of dis belief so that we believe it is real and happening to us.

Media News is still not real in the sense that what you are seeing is being produced by media for the effect of delivering attention grabbing TV so you will watch. The purpose of Media is to get you to watch by whatever means that works.

What I’m trying to grasp is the it is not main stream or little stream or left or right stream that is informing us, it is Media Stream, and there are a primary message and a secondary message. We think the primary message is the content of the news, but according to Marchal MacCluhan, the primary message is the medium itself. The message is the delivery system and not what is being delivers. Just as the message of a cigarette was not pleasure but nicotine.

The main stream Medea that holds all the streams…Media as an emotional delivery system, and Media News as an anxiety delivery system. The nation is afflicted with the feeling of dread, of being off course, of headed of an abyss. News comes hot right out of the Subjective Oven. What happens in London is happening in my home town. The objective news of print is now the Subjective news of the electronic media that streams mayhem into the minds like a drug being mainlined.
