Jesus as a threshold guardian means Jesus is the Way…but the Way to what? In orthodox Christianity Jesus is the door way to the Church (the Body of Christ) as mediator between you and God. So you can’t go directly to God, you have to go theory the God/man Jesus. He is the bridge or the way because he is half man and half God. He has one foot in both dimensions at the same time. Therefore he alone is qualified to take you to. your Father, your Source.
But orthodox interpretation of this through history is that the Church, which is a social organization in time, is the mediator. And now the church is at odds with the secular world, even to the point of getting involved with politics. Now if you want to meet God, you have to be a Republican.
But you don’t really meet God. Christianity is a relationship with God through the Church, and Jesus is the door keeper. In the Eastern traditions there is no relationship with God. There is identity with God. And in the West, this can get your crucified. Jesus himself was crucified for blasphemy. Jesus said to his contemporaries: “The father and I are One.”…..Who do you think you are, Jesus Christ? Crucify him!
If you say you are Jesus you get put away or de-friended on Facebook, at least. We can’t compute that because we are thinking in form. So the symbolism of Jesus and the Cross and the whole story of death and resurrection when interpreted One way means a rebirth into the Church; when interpreted the mystical way it means rebirth out fo the church. Same symbols, different outcome.
