When does a political party become a cult, and what is a cult? A cult restores the center and safety of a people who are fragmented and anxious. They feel they have lost their center, their power, and their status in society. Social customs and laws no longer hold their historical position of power and respect. They long for someone who will restore their place in history. When those conditions exist, a Center Leader will appear.
He will magically appear, descended from above with magical power that defeat his enemies. With great confidence he proclaims the he alone can restore the people’s center. He will lock up their enemies. He will build a wall to protect them from the corruption of their historical place in society. He will purify society and clear the swamp. He will trust his own infallible instincts, his gut, and not rely on the so-called experts and intelligentsia. He speaks in the rhythms of the people. He asks them to let him be their Voice.
A sacred transfer then happens where the people invest their power in their great leader. From then on he can do no wrong because whatever he does is in their interest. His enemies won’t let him do his job. His rallies are like Evangelical revivals where his people chant in unison the rallying cries of the movement. They will stick with him to the end because….they have given away their power of individual conscience. Their Leader is their conscience and their compass.
Trump did not create Trump; conditions created Trump. When a people share the same grievance, and government does not address them, there is a longing for The One who will be recognized when seen. They don’t know who or where he will come from, but they will recognize him when he appears and there will an instant love affair. Mr. Right has finally arrived and he will be my Lord. He will be my husband and make choices for me, take care of me, and give me children (prosperity). I will be obedient unto him. (You like that analogy?)
