Is Soccer is a religion, and I think it is, then it is the reenactment of the dying and resurrected son in the womb of the Goddess (the oval stadium that is the cosmos). One of the teams is going to become the new King after killing off the contenders. But this new king will only live for four years, and then a new king will be chosen through this ritual killing off of the contenders. Soccer is performed in a sacred space, the oval stadium where all attention is focused the moving soccer ball like a cat on a laser dot.
During the contest, the emotions of the congregation rises into rapture and falls into despair, over and over. Heaven and Hell are created there. Every team is each nation’s local god. To be Number One is to be the universal God, the One that has no second.
During the sacred match, the mind is stilled. Worry and distractions are left at the gate of the temple. The people move in unison as their god struggled to win for them. The crowd roars with one voice, one body, the Mystical Body of Soccer. I and my team are One, says each fan.
All the ingredients are there for Soccer to be a religion, a national religion. Why doesn’t America have this religion? We have politics. Every four years we kill and resurrect our Son of God, our king.
The pairs-of-opposites (the teams) compete to become the One without a second and king for four years, the Lord of the Goddess. She stages the competition in her oval womb to choose her consort. But this king will only live for four years, the dying and resurrected man/god. But the teams willingly sacrifice themselves for the chance to be King for a day. The Goddess (nature) is forever; the kings come and go. This is the mythology and rhythms of the Planting Civilizations. Man must get in alignment with Mother Nature…at least until now when we cut the cord and drifted off into our alternative universe.
