Evangelicals love putting their victims on the Cross and worshipping them. The more the victims suffer and bleed the Moore they bow to and weep crying, the Blood of Jesus. Anyone who stands accused by the Pharisees becomes a god. Each new “victim” is resurrected on a new cross. The history road is lined with these crosses. A fresh victim must be found as soon as the old one’s blood dries up.
From the view of the Evangelicals, they are a tiny band of true Humans or Christians put upon by the secular humanists (Roman/Greek world) and like a cleared space of water in an algae covered pond, they are in constant danger of being covered by sin. It is sacrifice that keeps the clear space open. But the flesh and blood can’t be wafers and grape juice once a week. That is a dead ritual. It must be real blood and real flesh, a living ritual. But rituals are a ritual when it is repeated over and over, and a ritual is repeated over and over because it is unconscious. The body does it, but the mind is not aware of what the body is doing. The mind is dissociated from its collective actions.
The Great Christian mythos meant to liberate the individual from the suffering of history now imprisons its brave hearts in history. The Judas here is both the Republicans (Nixon and Regan) and the protestant leaders like Jerry Falwell who called the Republican Party the Moral Majority. The injection of Religious Morality into the political body has been like heroin to those who identify is that of a victim. Through ME says Trump, the new St Paul, you will have your power restored. Let me show you the new scapegoats who will take your sins upon themselves.
This is very difficult to see because we have to become the movie The Sixth Sense. “I see dead people.” The walking dead are those who are living in a mythic ritual believing it is the real world that stands alone separate from them. But no…they are creating this world like Shakespeare creates a play and then the actor forgets he is acting and lives in the play repeating itself over and over. The self deception occurs because the play set, the real world changes. They can’t see the play (myth) because the set is always different. Identified with the characters in the ritual play, in order to see the mythic ritual they have created, they have to give up their identity with the play….Oh SNAP….They have to see through the Eye of Christ instead of the Eye of the Victim. Christ is no victim.
But this piece is not just to throw dirt on the good Christians. We are all caught in the double-bind of acting out our personal stories as ritual reenactments. The Christians just act out their group story, their story as a chosen tribe lost in the world looking for the Promised Land in the future or the Lost Garden in the past. The middle land, this NOW is a purgatory, a bad place out of which to escape or out of which to be led by a Moses. We are all people of our story.
But to erase the collective mind of its stories and myths is not the answer either, for that is what the Enlightenment did. The rational scientific mind erased all the ancient myths, but they threw the baby out with the dirt water. The flat horizontal world of scientific materialism is a wasteland….without meaning and value. So we are caught in a double-bind of two incompatible commandments neither of which can be obeyed at the same time, but they must.
The two commandments are (1) There is meaning to your life (2) there is no meaning to your life. The religious view gives you meaning; the scientific view gives you no meaning because you are an accident, just a bundle of molecules. So…in order to obey these two imperatives, modern man has created an alternative world in which he is both rational (there are no myths and unicorns) and irrational (Moore is our savior). The modern Evangelical mind gets to eat its cake and keep it, be in the rational world and not in it at the same time. What do they sacrifice in order to achieve this magic trick? Christ and a whole mind, in the world but not of it.
Joseph Campbell said modern man is in free fall, having erased all the myths that supported humanity in his history. But man cannot live by scientific materialism alone, he must have meaning, and meaning comes through story, a context that gives meaning to random data. Myth is story that gives one’s individual life and collective a cohesive unity and meaning. Meaning must have unity. A random throw of sticks on the ground has no meaning until they form a picture.
So where do our stories of meaning come from today? Movies and art…and, of course, the Bible. For the mythical mind that is deprived of its stories, the mind projects its stories on reality and live in them there, but forgetting that it has projected the story on the screen in a living movie, like those Bible movies in the 50s.
