I love Zen, not as a philosophy, not as a religion, not as metaphysics, but as a way of seeing. My primary teachers have been Alan Watts and Albert Low, along with various other Zen master writers, but these two are the ones that have really influenced me the most, especially Albert Low. (check out his books)
Zen is the science of your consciousness, not the consciousness of mankind or the mind like psychology, but Your Consciousness as You. Who are You? No one can tell you. You can’t find You in religion or philosophy—and I have certainly tried, believe me—you have to find yourself by losing your self, by losing who. you think you are, and that is Zen.
I don’t have a Zen master. However, I did have two yoga masters in the 70s, and looking back their influence on my was like a chiropractic adjustments of the sou’s direction. You Zen Master can come to you in the books you choose, in the conditions you find yourself in. The master will come to you if you can’t get to a master, and that master will take the form that suits you. The Master is not a particular person. The master is the Teaching, not a noun, but a verb. You, your heart’s intention, your heart’s desire creates the master, creates the teaching. You are in control.
The master will appear in your life spontaneously. Your conditions are the control; the master will be controlled spontaneity, always a surprise. While you are the conditioned, the master is the unconditioned.
That is the universal experience people have when in the presence of a Master: while you are conditioned by your personality, the master is unconditioned. You don’t know what he is going to do to you.
The Master/student relationship is like that of a woman and a man: The female arouses the male and then has to live with what he does to or for her. Life is always a surprise. In the same way babies are a surprise, you are a surprise to yourself when you meet the master, in whatever form the master takes for you. The master is creative, so the master will take whatever form your conditions have created.
