Crack the Code is about developing the ability to see patterns behind the story or the content, seeing the Absolute behind the Relative, seeing the background behind the foreground objects. This ability to see the Medium as the Message comes spontaneously through the practice of meditation in which you gradually disinvest your attachment to your own story, your own pattern. You begin to just see thoughts as thought, and when thoughts are just thoughts they are no longer caused by your Story. You Story is unconscious, and your unconscious story of Me holds your Me in place, and this Me can’t see the pattern of the mind that hold it in place because when you see the patterns, the Me goes with them.
Invested in our Ego, we are also investing in our unconscious patterns. The practice of meditation is to make the unconscious conscious by disconnecting to the patterns of thought, which gives thought its powerful meaning, and just noticing thought as thought and feelings as feelings. Connected to the unconscious pattern or our Story, thought and feeling bring us suffering. Out Story is as a story always going to be out of sync with reality. It is out of sync with reality because instead of aligning with reality, we try to make reality align with our story. And we always come up short. This is the cause of our suffering, says the Buddha, whose whole teaching is designed to make us aware of the unconscious patterns or story that controls out life to our detriment.
My dear mother-in-law was addicted to Harlequin Romances. Now there is a successful pattern which,—when the a write just knows the pattern in their body—will just get cracked out like sausage. Once you get the pattern down, you can crank out endless content that fits the pattern, because the pattern is the message. Look at. Seinfeld. A successful pattern that cranked out funny shows for 8 years. The pattern was the same, the content was different. WE enjoy the show because the pattern is unconscious, so we believe we are seeing fresh content. But the meaning of the content is shaped by the pattern, or theme that makes the TV show what it is. Once change in the patter, one change in the way the charters relates to each other, and the show would be dead.
If we can see the pattern or the message in the medium we are hold hostage by our unconscious. We are going blind. We think we know who we are and what we are doing but we don’t. And we know something is missing, that we are missing something. We have to cultivate curiosity, the curiosity of the detective inspector who smells out something not quite right. But where do we look? Not outside but inside at our own interpretation of reality. It is here that the clues lie. Image the frustration of the German people who could see the pattern of the Nazis, the Unconscious Story of the Nazis, and their inability to convince the majority who were held in trance by the Story. Oh….does this remind you of Trump?
Patterns are revealed, truth is revealed, when you stop effort to find it, to see it. Truth is always already present, the whole picture is always present, so the effort to see the whole fractures the whole like a storm fractures your digital TV screen. Patterns are like Russian Nesting Dolls. You begin to see patterns one doll at a time. You can’t leap frog over the whole nest of dolls. You have to reveal them on at a time. This revelation of the nesting dolls becomes the great adventure of your life.
