Be a River Pilot of Culture refers to Samuel Clemens as a river boat pilot where he got his name Mark Twain. Here we are on the Social Media/internet River Boat watching the river of Culture go by. Everything that appears seems to stand alone as itself. But the Pilot connects the dots and knows that that ripple hide a log or a sand bar. We passengers ignore the ripples because we have not awareness of patterns. Everything in Culture is presented as isolated stand alone events and they are analyzed as such.
If you catch a butterfly, you dissect it with the scape of analysis trying to find its cause so you can control it. You don’t pay any attention to the total environment of the Butterly. We see things as things and we don’t see context. We don’t see the whole that gives meaning to the parts.
Unless we can have a Eureka! gestalt of Culture as a context, we can’t understand the ripple that appear on the river of Culture through our window of the Internet.
How dod we get to that Eureka! Like a Sherlock, we suspend judgment and connect the dots.
