The wound in America is a split of our social order because it pits one inner voice as an individual against the same inner voice to obey and belong to a society. When the larger society is divided, it break up into smaller tribal societies, each demanding allegiance. That is where we are today.
While we live in a physical monolithic society where everyone obeys the same laws, traffic, shopping, at work, but emotionally we march to different drummers of our political party or religion or gang or family. Simultaneously we are trying to live in an order external world that in given a common order by science, while living in isolated tribal worlds of meaning. This is the recipe for madness.
This madness breaks out in violent eruptions like mass shootings. Given that we have no American mythos that is a thousand years old like European societies, we are a constant stew of incoming cultures, so the only thing that holds us together is Law and Order, externally imposed laws. There are no unspoken laws of custom and manners that hold our society together.
The positive side, however, shows that we are in the birthing process, the labor of a new America that transcends the wound and its opposing forces that has grid locked the nation. A new world is being born, and as always, there is resistance and dysfunction of the caterpillar before it becomes a butterfly.
