We are hot on the scent of why Vietnam broke our Trust in America be divided the One into Two Americas, a conflicted duality that morphs through time into our current grid lock of two. absolute views of reality that separate the American Cup into the outside versus the inside. The Ken Burns Documentary is a great place to start.
I experienced a radical split in my own mind during the 60s that parallel the split in the collective mind, so this is both an objective and subjective quest for this Holy Grail that heals the cup divided against itself. We are all in this cup together; the split in the collective mirrors a split in the individual mind. Big mind and little mind all reflect each other in One field. We can get a grasp of our own inner split by understanding the collective split from an overlook of the whole field. But we can’t understand the separation of the outside from the inside of the cup from inside the cup.
Wed. episode ended with the Sounds of Silence …and the silence where we began to doubt that the war was just and realized we were not going to win, and to suspect that our country was lying to us. Patriotism was split down the middle by this gapping wound. And still today the wound bleeds. Trust has been broken. The center of trust is lost, and mere anarchy prevails. All I feel is compassion for our people.
Much of the music and comedy we have today sprang forth out of the rift of the 60s like hot lava from a volcano. When the One is split into two contradictory yet mutually dependent sides, Art or Violence will erupt to restore the One. There must be One, so either creativity or destruction are the only two paths. Vietnam was the violence, with the riots the followed; Rock and role and comedy was the creativity. When the absolute is dead, all things are possible.
The Death of God was in theological minds in the 60s, but that’s an abstract god. The God that held us together was a monolithic belief in America as the One who could no no wrong. Did we not defeat the Axis and restore Europe. Were we not that wall that held back the barbarian Communists? Did we not have the most powerful military in the world? What could go wrong?
While this insane violence was going on in Vietnam, there was also the creativity of the Great Society and Civil Rights. When the old America died, all things were possible.
What was the old America that died in the 60s? Watch Mad Men for the clues. It was like before the 60s we believed in the egg shell of culture, the objective whole in which all the parts fit unconsciously. Virtue was blind obedience to cultural norms, which were pretty strict when it came to any mention of the body. Just watch the reaction to Elvis, either love or hatred.
This monolithic objective culture that excluded the body and the subjectivity of the individual, the awakened sense of self as a unique individual was dying, and the Subjective I as a unique self was being born. But not a true unique self that stand alone, but a rebellious unique self, like the son who finds his identity in being Not Main Stream Culture, or the Father Culture.
Father Culture said Go to War, you country right or wrong. Rebellious Son, said Hell No, I won’t do. America’s Sons were divided like Cain and Able. It didn’t help the the Father Culture lied to the sons and sent them to their death for no real reason. While the Ideal was noble, the boots on the bloody ground were not noble. The objective outside and the objective inside did not match. Cultural mind was split from individual mind.
For those of us were who not alive during the 50s, it is hard to image the fish bowl we lived in. You couldn’t say “pregnant” in movies or TV. The body and any reference to it was taboo. Everything was Head and not Body, Rational thought and no emotions, which were repressed if they challenged though, cultural thought. The unseen Censor was everywhere. And the Cultural Mind was caught in the life/death struggle with Communism, and life was as if a cocked gun was held to your head that could go off at any moment.
With the Cuba crisis we scared that crap out of ourselves as it suddenly became possible the gun would go off and America and Russia would shoot themselves simultaneously. Unable to shoot the USSR, America shot Communism in a proxy war called Vietnam. Unless we understand the Good and Evil split in the human world by the Cold War we can’t understand Vietnam and how that Cold War split because our split, once the USSR died.
The Search for America is the search for Justice. Is justice absolute or relative? Lets look at our assumptions.Nature itself is not just. Justice is an idea of balance we apply to reality with the judge as the one who applies the judgment. Each side of the scale judges its side is just, so we have a duality, or teeter totter with each end of the stick firmly seating in justice. They go up and own trying to restore justice with each end of the stick wanting to be on top.
So Justice, if there is Justice…must be created. It can’t be found in the known…Justice lies in the unknown and must be created, not discovered. Justice is a transcend Idea that is always allusive, yet we know it exists. Justice would be a Single Idea that transcends but includes both ends of the see saw. In that transcendent Idea, born from the conflicting knowns, balance is restored and justice is born— until the changing ground beneath the see saw create another imbalance and the search for Justice begins again. Justice is a traveling balance that is always transcending itself.
The Just America must constantly reinvent itself as the changing ground of reality is always creating new injustice that is the ingredients for a new Justice or balance.
Continuing our quest for the Absolute America that unifies all the parts, as I said this is a spiritual problem because when everything is relative, then each part must try to become the center that whole the society together. No wheel can work without an axil. The hurricane cannot exist without its eye. What is the Eye of America? In the 60s the Eye broke up and the American Storm lost its coherence that it had in WWII and the 50s. Breaking into two halves, each half say itself as the Absolute, the One Idea of America that had no second. And this moveable split continues today, sweeping up new historical content with the changing times, but the split and civil war remains the same, America divided against itself, each half seeing the lost Absolute that will heal the wound.
When the Whole breaks into two relative parts, they do so because they have lost reference to the Whole or the spokes have lost their hub. The reason we have a problem with Relativity in whatever form is that when the relative anchors itself to itself as the absolute, both halves are unstable since both change in relation to each other in a mirror reflection. So there must be an Absolute upon which to anchor the relative halves, a shift from each other as the. absolute to a transcendent absolute. What is the absolute center if it has no form, since all form is relative to other forms ? Here is the dilemma.
If the world is all relative, which Einstein said it was, there is no absolute anchor, so each relative world has to invent one, an ideology or perfect system, or belief, even an opinion can anchor us from the storm of relativity.
Religion which is the home of the Absolute sees the fault in making something relative absolutely; it a false Idol rightly says the religion mind.
But the religious absolutists have their flaw as well, because they will make their Belief/religion the absolute that all the relativists must bow to. Here is the root cause of the war between science and religion. And the Relativist see the fault in this. Science is relative; Religion is absolute.
However, neither sees the Absolute as transcendent of the Relative. Both try to make the absolute experienced in its form or ideas. But the Absolute is empty. The Absolute or totality can’t be experience in form because a form can’t contain all forms. The Absolute must be created, not out of the relative but from the unknown ,it must be born from the Unknown Womb of the cosmos. And once the Absolute is created or born…it becomes relative. The Absolute is always transcendent of the relative, yet they are mutually dependent and cannot exist without there other, in the same way the Mother cannot exist without the child, nor the child without the Mother.
It’s all there in Christina symbolism if we know how to look metaphorically.
