OH, finally a great movie to sink my insight into to, a movie that reveals wonder, a movie that we can all use as a referent to the Amazon within. The Zen of Wonder Woman means that we make a shift in paradigm from the enculturated view of WW as fiction to the Zen view that you ARE Wonder Woman, the Amazon within. Je Suis Wonder Woman. This Zen view is prior to time and gender, prior to culture (civilization) even. WW is the Eternal Now and what it is like to live in that state of being. So lets drop out of culture and drop into Wonder Woman.
But WW story sets us up with the island of the Amazon being timeless, a way of being that is not corrupted by the conflicts of Culture, which is War and under the dominion of the god of War, Ares, and the belief that man is Fallen and can’t get up. There are many layers of WW to peel back here, so where to begin.
Lets start with the Island of Amazonia where humanity exists prior to the overlay of civilization and the culture of war. We have to make the shift in perspective—if we are going to understand if not see the Zen of Wonder Woman—from Time and the external world of space/time to NOW that is always present like the source of a fountain of time. Creation comes out of NOW like a fountain, but as water in the fountain we see the fountain not as our Source but as the created water of the fountain. Our eyes that see only water flowing reality in time can’t see the Source or the emptiness that is the source of the water. Amazonia is that which lives on the lip of the fountain, with one foot in the Source and one foot in the created water. You get the idea.
Wonder Woman is both creator and created. While men see themselves as the created and reality is chaos that has to be controlled, a reality that includes women….because, you know, they are crazy…because they have one foot in the Source of Being and one foot in Culture. Men, on the other hand have both feet in culture.
Women have one foot in Being as the Creator, as the source of life, and one foot in Culture. This is why women are the guide for men to their internal Amazon or Source, where they can heal themselves from the conflict of culture in which they live with both feet.
There are two levels here that we are investigating. One is the Amazon within us, and the other is the Amazon in women, and how women are the. guide for men to the Amazon within. We all must say: Je Suis Wonder Human. Meaning that we can discover the Wonder in our life, we can discover our True Nature, or Original Face (of Zen). The pain of Culture has concealed our original nature, and because our very Ego is a product of Culture, a mirror of culture, we look for our true nature in the future, which is a misperception of Culture which keeps us looking for our True Nature in the wrong place, tomorrow.
Wonder Woman is a dream by which, through which to wake up from the dream of Culture and time. Make culture transparent to the transcendent, says Joseph Campbell. Make Wonder Woman transparent to your inner Wonder.
In Diana’s Amazon world there is no doubt that she is not an Amazon. There is no choice but to be who she is. She is unambiguous, which means innocent. Like a child she questions why the adults in culture do what they do, for it seems insane.
Diana goes through a discovery in the story when she discovers that she cannot bring an end to Culture and restore man original peace. Each of us must discover that we through our own personal will can bring peach to earth, can create a static peace, a world that never changes. We can’t stop change. But we can discover how to be at peace with change. We can engage change creatively, and restore peace moment by moment by being peace, by not being the culture of conflict and war.
Like Bruce Lee, Wonder Woman moves faster than her opponents; she has timing while they don’t, Wonder Woman is prior to their action; she is upstream of their action so her opponents are always catching up, delayed by an fraction of a second. When they move, she is already there. Wonder Woman has Timing. The uncultured man is out of timing, always a second out of sync. Not in the Zone. Culture mind is a buffer, a mediator between the Doer and the Doing. Wonder Woman is not the Doer. Life is doing her. There is no one there doing anything so there is no gap between the subject (the doing Ego) and the action and the object. Wonder Woman is the doer, the doing and the thing done. There is no division in innocence. This is Zen.
