Watch the Thinker

January 15, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

“Is fear preventing you from taking action? Acknowledge the fear, watch it, take your attention into it, be fully present with it. Doing so cuts the link between the fear and your thinking.” Eckhart Tolle

In our culture we promote the Doer, the Thinker, the person of Action….someone must be doing the action, we say. Our grammar dictates it. A subject (a thing) does something to objects. The verb is what done by the doer. This is an objective map of reality that we, because of our into-European language believe is an actual map of reality; in fact we believe the map is reality. But you can see that our grammar fragments reality into two split screens, someone doing something to something or someone. The Doer has the power to do stuff to objects, control them, fix them, make them happy.

And this Doer has fear that he may not be doing it right, will make a mistake, will be exposed by his doing, will die because of his doing; all kinds of things make the Doer afraid, and this fear inhibits his actions, dulls it, bends it, and freezes it. This Doer is the Thinker, the Subject of the Object in our Grammar.

So who is it that “acknowledge the fear, watches it…is fully present with it? This Watcher is not the Doer because the Doer and the fear are one, The Thinker has a thought of fear and is afraid…of what? The Thinker is afraid of his own thought.

When you notice this, you are noticing the Doer or Thinker as an object. But as the Watcher of the Doer, you are not a noun or a subject. You are a Verb. Your watching is an action that has no subject, no thing doing it. There is just the watching, just the Verb. This Watching, this noticing now becomes the subject-verb-object. You are watching your mind language, And that is our true nature. You are not the language of your mind. You are not the Operating System of your mind. You can see this and be free.
