“Surrender is inner acceptance of what is without any reservations. If you have lived long enough, you will know that things “go wrong” quite often. It is precisely at those times that surrender needs to be practiced if you want to eliminate pain and sorrow from. your life.” Eckhart Tolle (from A New Earth)
Wherever you are right now, your are Aware OF these words. Lets do an experiment. Become aware of…..your right thumb. Like a flash light your awareness changed object from the words to your thumb. Now relax your awareness OF something, turn off the flashlight and just be aware of the whole room you are in without selecting anything to be aware OF. You accept the whole room, don’t you.
But bring you awareness back to your thumb. Now the whole room is gone out of awareness—though it remains in the background otherwise you would not know where you were—and you are once again an observer aware of. your thumb. Notice how when you are aware of an object, you as the observer appear. But when you relax the flashlight, and just let your awareness rest in the whole room, there is no sharp definition of your as an observer.
Apply this to Tolle’s teaching here. Inner acceptance is relaxed Awareness AS the whole room of your mind without reservations, which means selective observation or thought or images. You just turn off the flashlight and let the mind room be as it is. Ah….This practice makes you aware that it is your flashlight of judgment, selecting and rejecting this and that thought is the cause of pain and sorrow.
