“Be present as the watcher of your mind—of your thoughts and emotions as well as your reactions in various situations. Watch the thought, feel the emotion, observe the reaction. You will then feel the observing presence itself behind the context of your mind, the silent watcher.” Ekchart Tolle (from A New Earth).
Being mindful begins with effort, remembering to be mindful. It begins with the body: breath and body sensations. Mindfulness then evolves to thoughts and emotions. Then you realize that the intention to be mindful is also a thought. One then finds a knot you can’t untie: How can I stop trying to try? Ah…here is the portal to Presence. It is here that the fruit of mindfulness spontaneously falls from the tree. You See that you can’t try and be the Watcher of the mind.
I’m reminded of the Slip Knot: when you pull it, it eventually slips out of its own knot. Oh, what an awakening!
