“There are three ways in which the ego will treat the present moment: as a means to an end, as an obstacle, or as an enemy.” Ekchart Tolle (from The Power of Now)

Life is a River of flowing time. The Ego is the view point from the river bank so the mind can manipulate the river and change its course, making tools and damns to control the future, to save or spend time. This view point lifted man above the animals and made him King. But it also isolated the king, and now the modern man is like Napoleon exiled to an island, a view point out of which he cannot get. Modern now believes he IS the viewpoint on the river bank, and he can’t get back into the river of reality where he feels real. Tolle teaches as if the River is calling us back from the bank.
