Why isn’t the Ego personal? All problems are personal because I feel the pain as a person. Person says this is Mine, this is my pain…and you did it to me. So personal means the center of the universe, like the hub of a wheel where all experiences comes to me as personal. This person gives my consciousness a coherent reality in which to live. Without this personal center I would become psychotic, without a center..terrified.
Tolle teaching here seems to be paradoxical. If you know that the ego isn’t personal, it takes a person to know that. No matter what we do, we keep dividing the mind into I and IT, a person having experience.
So what is the impersonal You? The Awareness that in stillness SEES this lunar waxing and tanning mind that takes everything personally. If the mind is the ever-changing personal moon, then unchanging still Sun is Awareness. When the Sun God awakens it’s the Lion’s Roar of the Buddha, or as Tolle says, the NOW.
This reminds me of the Buddha’s House Builder exclamation: “Through the round of many births I roamed without reward, without rest, seeking the house-builder. Painful is birth again & again. House-builder, you’re seen! You will not build a house again. All your rafters broken, the ridge pole destroyed, gone to the Unformed, the mind has come to the end of craving.”
The round of many births (minds states) is the moon; the Buddha is the sun of Awareness.
