“If you can be absolutely comfortable with not knowing who you are, then what’s left is who you are—the Being behind the human, a field of pure potentiality father than something that is already defined. Give up defining yourself—to yourself and other. You won’t die. You will come to life.” Eckhart Tolle (from The Power of Now)
The fault is in our grammar. Our into-European language structures words and reality as Subject-verb-object. This is a noun based language, a thing based reality where nouns and doing something to nouns. Things are in the saddle and ride your mind.
But Toole is saying: Wait…you are actually a Verb. Nouns are defined, verbs are not. A verb does not know who it is because it is always moving, always changing, always doing. A verb is pure potential. A verb is life. Nouns are always the past, defined and known and buried in a dictionary. You will find no verbs in this tomb. Break out!
