From Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: “Surrender is the simple but profound wisdom of yielding to rather than opposing the flow of life. The only place where you can experience the flow of life is the Now, so to surrender is to accept the present moment unconditionally and without reservation. It is to relinquish inner resistance to what is.”
Okay, lets follow this thread to see where it leads. Lets look at this from the angle of Choice. Is surrender a choice? Choice is between at least two objects, either this or that. Which should I choose. I surrender a choice between surrendering and not surrendering? I don’t think so. Why is that? We choose something to get a better deal, and I want a better deal because this moment now is not such a good deal, so I think I can choose my way out of it. I divide Now into two choices for a future and better Now. Each choice is an opening path to a better future. I want to get out of Now with my choice.
But this is not surrender to the Now. Surrender as Tolle is talking about it means giving up the choice for a better Now. This surrender cannot be chosen because choice means I have one more strategy up my sleeve to get out of Now. “Let me try this”, says Choice. I, my ego, always thinks I have a choice. The Ego is the Chooser. However, when we exhaust our strategies and our choices all prove to be futile, we come to the spontaneous realization that I can’t choose my way out of Now. This Single Idea, this realization, is surrender.
The Seeing that I can’t choose a better Now, which means a better Me, is the surrender to the Now and the Me that I already am. I realize that I cannot be better than I am right now. There is no choice here. There is only the Seeing that this is True. Truth IS Seeing. Truth is the choice-less choice.
