From Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: “If you cannot remove yourself from a situation, and there is no action you can take, then use the situation to make you go more deeply into surrender, more deeply into the Now, more deeply into Being.” _
This Tolle quote really fits into my plans for next year. Emily Martin, my wife Tilly, and I are creating a Body and Mind Yoga for those with diabetes. The theme of this three legged stool is Mindfulness: (1) Mindfulness of posture (yoga), (2) Mindfulness of mind (insight meditation), and (2) Mindfulness of eating. Emily, a certified yoga teacher, will take care of the first leg, I will work with the second, and my wife, who has been successfully managing her diabetes through mindful eating will share her success in the third leg of this stool. One needs all three for the stool to stand, to be firmly centered in your life. If you can’t remove yourself from diabetes, and there is no way to bargain with diabetes, then you must use diabetes to become more present to life, to become joyful and authentic to your life.
One has to work with the world (the diabetes) you are given. In this way, instead of running from diabetes as an enemy, you make this mad act of turning towards diabetes and accept it as your friend, as your guru who will guide you to the ground of your essential being and true identity, the one you have been searching for your whole life.
