“When you surrender to what is and so become fully present, the past ceases to have any power. You do not need it anymore. Presences is the key. The Now is the key.” Eckhart Tolle
Okay, lets pull this cotton ball apart. When we drive a car with a clutch and we put our foot on it, the car’s memory or inertia takes a while to run down before the car stops. Becoming fully present is like putting your foot on the clutch, but notice what happens if you don’t take your foot off the gas. The engine races. This reminds me of meditation.
Sitting for meditation is putting your foot on the clutch and then we notice that out foot is still on the gas. Noticing that, we take our foot off the gas. We begin to rest in being present. But the past, my karmic memory still has power. My old habits continue. But something has changed. As my habits get weaker, I learn to laugh when then pop up, and I laugh because I also notice when I’m putting my foot on the gas and investing in my past.
