“Surrender is the simple but profound wisdom of yielding to rather than opposing the flow of life. The only place where you can experience the flow of life is the Now, so to surrender is to accept the present moment unconditionally and without reservation. It is to relinquish inner resistance to what is.” Eckhart Tolle
Surrender is such a weak word we think. We are commanded in our culture to never give up, to keep fighting no matter what the odds. But here is the commandment to yield, to give it up, and this is the commandment of Jesus also. This is a double-bind of two contradictory commandments that we must obey but can’t, yet we must. Lets frame the commandments differently.
Surrender means giving in to the team, the group, that which is larger than. you. Tolle says the largest thing is the Now or Being. Surrender to that is the same as surrendering to you wife or husband. You don’t resist. You open.
But the opposing commandment is to be Unique, which means be different, and to be different from the whole. you can’t at the same time give in to the whole. And here is where we are stuck. Unable to retreat, unable to move forward. Unable to act; unable to not act. Our Will Power is caught on the horns of a dilemma, a self-generating feedback loop.
In Zen this is the tension that creates Satori or AHAH! I SEE. And with this Seeing you fall on the floor laughing at the absurdity of the human dilemma. The center of your consciousness or self suddenly shifts from the ME that orbits the Now to Being the Now. You shift from the planet to the Son.
