ON/OFF thinking has become our normal thinking, as if it is the only way to think. This is either/or thinking. Something is either Right or Wrong. That’s it. This is moralistic thinking when you put it in a religious context. It is a light switch in the mind that allows no gradual turning on of the light, a light/dark ambiance for your romantic dinner. The light is either fully on or fully off with this time of fundamentalist thinking. There is no compromise, no nuance, to integration, no balance of forces and no love. There is only WIN or LOSE and you are going to LOSE because I cannot choose Dark. If I can’t WIN I will destroy everything because that will be better than DARK. I still get to choose, and if I get to choose, I still win, even though we’re both dead.
Fundamentalist Thinking is On/Off with moralism. Everything is what is it, created that way, and there is no gradience, no. compromise, no mix. Meat to one side, Potatoes to another. Don’t make a stew. Male is male, female is female, you can’t mix them. Everything falls into either/or absolute categories. The key here is Absolute. You must be able to CHOOSE either THIS or THAT. When you can’t see black or white, you can’t choose, and you panic. You get angry and destroy things. The Source of this thinking is the belief that I AM THE CHOOSER. I Choose, therefore I exist.
Choice in this context is Control. I control because I choose. Compromise waters down my power of Choice. My existence cannot be watered down, for then I’m weakened. Ii cannot control when I am weak, therefore I must choose to be strong by always making the other Lose. ON/OFF thinking when applied to Life is Death Thinking….it always ends in violence and destruction.
On/Off thinking has it’s place when making stuff. But when it comes to Life, it is deadly. On/Off Thinking becomes our only way of thinking when we have lost our Center in life itself. Then, having lost our ground, we are totally invested in our self Image (See Mad Men). This self image, this belief in myself as a thought, is like an ice cube that can’t afford to melt because it has lost touch with its true nature that is water. Ice Cube thinking has to be on/on, or win/win because it can’t afford to lose or compromise or get watered down from its frozen position.
