The Zen of Satchitananda

May 26, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

If we reverse the words from Sat (Being) Chit (Knowing) to Knowing….Being…it is easier to grasp. I know is assumed in every statement like “It’s raining.” I don’t need to say I Know…it’s raining. We just say “It’s raining.” So knowing is just assumed. Knowing is the ghost in the machine. Knowing is the head you can’t see above your neck. Knowing is prior to everything known or Being. I know IT (Being). But I can’t know the knower as an IT can I.

Our materialistic culture that grew out of the Middle Ages on the breath of the scientific method has created wonders never seen before. Human civilization that had pretty much stayed the same suddenly burst into a new reality. We split consciousness like we split the atom into I-IT. I am aware of things, and I can imagine new things, and by discovering the laws of things I can change the future and then live in what I create. The Scientific Method invented future and its thrust is to get there into the better world it is creating, a world where there will be no discomfort, pain and even death. The Kingdom of God has been brought down to earth. All we have to do is try a little harder and we will know everything there is to know. We have computers now that will run everything. We humans will be able to just lay back on our recliner and push buttons like ancient kings being waiting on my their servants. All our wishes will be granted. This is the utopia we still secretly believe in. Tomorrow will be better than today.

Another phrase thrown around in the Sanskrit I AM That. Knowing (“I”) am That (Being or form)….Is there a separate sense of “I” when I am That? When we go to a movie and get absorbed in the movie. I AM the Movie (That). Someone pokes you and the person next to you is That and I am separate. I-IT.

Our consciousness oscillate back and forth seamlessly between Sat and Chit. We have the Bliss when they become One. But our everyday mind lives in a dual world of I separate from IT, and IT is my own experience. I am separate from my own Experience, which is ME….so we live in a dual world in which Ii am separated from myself. Our minds are split and we yearn for unity, to restore our original unity. Even Trump got elected on this promise to Restore Unity.

Meditation is intentionally sitting in Being, which is always already Now. We just sit and let the tension of I separated from IT relax. The effort to have a good experience is the effort of I-IT to find unity and the cessation of the pain of the split consciousness. The mirror feels pain when it is separated from its reflection. When the mirror and its reflection are one, the I-IT, those still there is now longer seeking Satchitananda.
