We are digging deeper into the gold mine of Ambiguity. Looking at it from different angles each day on a voyage of discovery, because insights come when you inquire into mystery, and ambiguity is a mystery. Mystery means not clear and distinct. We project angels or demons there. “What’s in Hillary’s mysterious email box?”
Ambiguity is the Unknown, because the known is always fixed by definition, and if the definition is not clear and distinct, we improve the definition to eliminate any ambiguity. Science hates ambiguity. Our materialistic (noun world) hates ambiguity because things can’t be ambiguous. A tree is a tree and not a water fountain. But in poetry and dream we must have ambiguity. Nothing is fixed in dream. The Dream, the unconscious, the very source of our waking non-ambiguous consciousness is…ambiguous. GOD is ambiguous!
Buddha says all is impermanent. Everything dies. Life is change, flux…or..ambiguous. Change means the old and the new are One. The two that is One. We like to separate old from new because our language cannot communicate ambiguity, unless we are a poet.
Everything gets separated into this or that. Duality becomes two opposite pole. Non-dual is ambiguous. Non-Dual is not this or that but this/that. We don’t’ like that. Uncertainty makes us feel uncertain…or ambiguous. What…you mean I’m ambiguous? Ego won’t stand for that! I must be a clear and distinct something. How will God find me if I’m changing..If I’m ambiguous, no one will know my true name because I don’t have one. My Name is Ambiguous.
My personality bird has a history, a place in time, and we can track its behavior. This bird is known by its visual qualities and its behaviors. The personality conscious is dual, however. A subject perceiving objects that it believes are external to it. The Personality conscious is I-IT, and this is needed to function in the world, to catch a bus and make stuff. However, the environment this bird lives in, our western civilization that is, recognizes only separates individual birds, so for each bird it assumes its personality is something fixed, because in th eyes of other birds it is fixed as an IT. The I-IT consciousness that is believed to be the only consciousness fixes everything into ITs. Change then threatens this IT reality.
But reality IS change. And change is ambiguous: it is old and new at the same time. The IT mind must separate the ambiguity of change into this IT and that IT, so you can choose what IT you like.
The Witness Awareness, however, is not an IT, so this awareness just goes with change as change, change aware of itself. The witness awareness is ambiguous. It is aware of the I-IT mind because it doesn’t create IT to perceive. Ambiguity can see ambiguity because it is not afraid of ambiguity. The Witness is Ambiguity aware of itself. The I-IT consciousness, while necessary to function in the material world is no longer the center of the world as an ego. From the Ambiguity Awareness, the center of the world is KNOWING, not the IT that it knows. Instead of velcro with ITS sticking to you, you become Teflon. Nothing can stick to ambiguity.
My wife is, always is an English teacher. I taught English in HS for three years and failed. I couldn’t stand the restrictions of grammar, the Law of grammar. I wanted to break out, to be spontaneous, to be free of grammar and being correct, being fixed. I used to give her my writing to proof (now I don’t because I write so much it’s an overload. But it was irritating when I had a great insight, and all she could see was the mistakes. English teachers and ministers are people of the book, of the law. They exist to correct you, to point out and erase your sin. My wife and I have a good dance together. She keeps me in line with the proper steps while I am always breaking free from the rule.
What happens is that in the early stages of freedom, we need the rule, we need the English teacher/minister in order to have something to rebel against. Freedom depends on the Law, on having something to break free of. That is not freedom true but first stage in freedom.
That was what Jesus Christ was all about at the deeper level. He came not to obey or disobey the Law but to fulfill the law, to be one with the Law…but that law was not grammar or biblical. The Law one comes to fulfill is the Law of Creativity, or the Logic of Ambiguity. One must obey the law of ambiguity, which is no law….when you obey no law, you are free from grammar and now you are a rapper or poet. The reality of change creates laws, it doesn’t obey laws.
And there is the ambiguity: obey the law; don’t obey the law. Law/No Law….Now choose. If you choose law you are wrong, if you choose no law you are wrong. That’s Zen. Therefore, the final realization is that YOU are ambiguous. You are not fixed. You are not a noun that is defined and put in a book. You are the creator of the laws you will live by…you are the Unborn. The lawless that obeys the law….of creativity.
