This was a good talk I felt because I feel I’m scraping away the Patterns of Perception that are dividing the American mind, not through judgment but through understanding. A Pattern of Perception is in yoga psychology a Samskara, and a Samskara is like a tape-looped current in the individual and collective mind that shape our perception of ourselves in reality. We are created by these patterns when they are activated, and they are not always activated. Eckhart Tolle called them Pain Body that come up to the surface as our perceptions to feed….on us.
The two Samskaras we are looking at here in our Collective Mind is #1 There is racism everywhere! #2 there is rascal nowhere!
When these to Patterns intersect on social media there is a flash point, an emotional eruption on both side of the waves. In fact, the Samskaras create flash points so they can feed themselves. Anger and conflict strengthens our patterns of perception. If not fed, they disappear. All over America, like lightening bugs in the. night, flash points blink where these two Samskaras meet in combat. You have little blinks on social media, and raging fires in the streets. Our Patterns of Perception run to these flash points like high school kids to a school yard fight. American Patterns of Perception are affirmed by our violence. Anger gives us the feeling of power and that we are doing something to remove the pain of the Samskara.
But instead of seeing the Samskara in our own mind, we just see it in the Other mind, and it is there that we attack our own Samskara. Instead of throwing the water of Mindfulness on the Samskara, we throw gasoline. Instead of throwing forgiveness, we throw blind judgment. Instead of rising to the Sermon on the Mount, we bury ourselves in the mountain of Samskara.
